Recent Fox News Poll Reveals Growing Concerns Over ICE Practices

More than half of voters express approval for President Donald Trump’s approach to border security, yet new findings from a Fox News survey indicate significant discontent regarding his immigration policies. Approximately 59% of respondents consider the tactics employed by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency as overly aggressive, marking a noticeable rise in criticism since July.

Shifting Perceptions of Immigration Enforcement

The survey results show that public opinion is increasingly polarized regarding ICE’s effective execution of its core mission. Among the voters surveyed, only 29% believe that the agency’s enforcement actions accurately adhere to Trump’s commitment to focus on apprehending illegal immigrants with criminal records. Specifically, 25% feel this alignment occurs most of the time, while 19% believe it does so sometimes. A notable portion of the electorate, 27%, asserts that ICE does not consistently target the right individuals.

Growing Dissatisfaction Among Key Demographics

Interestingly, the perception that ICE is too aggressive has significantly increased among various demographic groups. The report highlights a 14-point surge in concern among Whites lacking a college degree, along with a 19-point rise among moderate voters and an impressive 22-point increase among independents. Additionally, right-leaning factions, such as Trump supporters, demonstrate this growing unease, with 9% more indicating ICE’s tactics feel excessively aggressive, alongside increases of 14% among Republican women and 23% among non-MAGA Republicans.

Voter Concerns About Tactics Rather Than Targets

When those who view ICE’s approach as overly aggressive are asked about their specific concerns, the focus tends to be on the methods employed rather than the individuals targeted. A strong 44% attribute their concerns to ICE’s use of excessive force. Meanwhile, 23% suggest the agency is mistakenly targeting the wrong people. Notably, 29% acknowledge that both factors contribute to their dissatisfaction.

The Broader Landscape of Public Opinion

This survey was conducted between January 23 and January 26 and comes on the heels of a tragic incident during a Minneapolis protest, where federal agents involved in law enforcement actions resulted in the death of Alex Pretti.

Despite the rising concerns over ICE’s methods, border security remains Trump’s strongest issue, earning him a favorable job approval rating of 52% from voters. This figure shows a slight increase from 51% in December but reflects a decrease from a peak of 57% approval registered in September. Among Democrats, 17% approve of Trump’s handling of border security, while approval drops to 9% regarding immigration issues. Among Republicans, the figures are markedly higher, with 89% and 85% expressing approval on border security and immigration, respectively.

Immigration Approval Ratings Steady

While 45% of voters endorse Trump’s performance on immigration, 55% disapprove, signaling little change from last month. Historically, his highest approval rating regarding immigration occurred in July, when it reached 48%. Data from Trump’s initial term shows that only once did his disapproval rate drop below 50%, occurring in April 2025 when it hit 48%.

Daron Shaw, a Republican pollster who collaborates with Democratic pollster Chris Anderson for the Fox News Poll, articulates that the results underscore a longstanding observation. Border security and immigration often emerge as distinct topics in public discourse. Republicans are generally viewed favorably concerning border security, yet sentiments about handling immigrants living illegally in the U.S. display a more complicated landscape.

Support for ICE Abolition Rising

Furthermore, the desire to abolish ICE has doubled since 2018, increasing from 18% to 36%. This rise is especially noticeable among White voters (up 20 points), women (up 21 points), independents (up 22 points), and Democrats (up 34 points). Conversely, opposition to the abolishment of the agency remains steady at 42%, while those unsure about their stance have decreased from 39% to 22%.

Collaboration Between Local Governments and ICE

Opinions are divided regarding whether local governments should be compelled to collaborate with ICE. Almost half of the respondents, 49%, advocate for mandatory cooperation, while 50% oppose it. Support for collaboration peaks among Republicans at 85%, in stark contrast to Democrats, who oppose this requirement by a substantial margin of 83%. Furthermore, independents exhibit a pronounced opposition, with 64% against requiring collaboration.

A New Era of Immigration Sentiment

This recent survey, which includes interviews from a sample of 1,005 registered voters randomly selected from a national voter file, illustrates shifting public sentiments on immigration enforcement and the role of ICE. Conducted by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research, the survey has a margin of error of ±3 percentage points. It highlights the complexities and evolving views surrounding immigration policy as the nation navigates these critical issues.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, understanding public opinion on immigration issues remains essential for policymakers and political analysts alike. The rising sentiment against perceived aggressions by ICE could lead to significant discussions and debates in future political arenas.
