The Boston Red Sox took a significant step to bolster their pitching rotation on Tuesday. As the 2026 MLB season approaches, Sonny Gray will don a Red Sox uniform, trading his previous allegiance to the St. Louis Cardinals.
In this strategic move, the Cardinals have agreed to exchange the experienced 36-year-old right-hander for two promising young players: pitcher Richard Fitts and 22-year-old left-handed prospect Brandon Clarke. Notably, St. Louis will also offset part of Gray’s financial obligations, taking on $20 million of his salary for the upcoming season, according to several sources.

The Red Sox faced challenges with pitching depth last season, particularly behind ace Garrett Crochet. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow emphasized that this trade is aligned with the team’s objective to strengthen its rotation—a goal expressed clearly during the offseason.
“We have been transparent about our desire to enhance the rotation and add a strong bat to our lineup,” Breslow shared during a conference call with the media. He acknowledged the urgency of addressing these needs without feeling overwhelmed by options. He clarified, “We feel optimistic about our current position as we move forward.”
Gray’s Track Record and Performance
Gray joined the Cardinals back in 2024 and had a notable season, finishing with a record of 14 wins and 8 losses alongside a 4.28 ERA. His acquisition brings reliable experience to a Red Sox team eager for improvement.
Reflecting on Gray’s capabilities, Breslow noted, “When assessing Sonny’s background, we recognize that he has consistently pitched at the forefront of rotations. Metrics such as strikeout rates and walk ratios are critical—he excels in these categories.”
With a career spanning 13 years across five MLB teams, Gray boasts an impressive record of 125 wins and 102 losses, with a career ERA of 3.58.
Fitts and Clarke: Future Prospects for the Cardinals
Richard Fitts, who had a rookie season in Boston, finished with a record of 2 wins and 4 losses coupled with a 5.00 ERA. Meanwhile, Brandon Clarke has yet to make his major league debut, having primarily pitched at the Class A level. Clarke is recognized as the No. 5 prospect in the Red Sox’s minor league system according to MLB.com evaluations. This trade strengthens the Cardinals’ farm system, adding depth and potential for future development.
Contract Adjustments and Financial Implications
Sonny Gray, who waived his no-trade clause to facilitate this move, previously had a contract guaranteeing him $40 million for the next two seasons. Under the new agreement, he will now receive a guaranteed salary of $31 million for 2026, alongside a mutual option for 2027 valued at $30 million, which includes a $10 million buyout.
