“I asked him about something that has been on my mind this year that’s been a little worrisome for me,” Giolito explained. His worries are primarily tied to the intersecting rise of sports betting and accessible social media platforms.

Giolito shared a personal account that highlights the disturbing reality many players face. “The threats when a player doesn’t perform well—threats to their family, threats to their life—it’s getting very tiring,” he stated, expressing concern for newcomers to the league who may not be prepared to handle such aggressive responses.
The 2019 All-Star emphasized that he has faced numerous angry messages online, irrespective of his on-field performance. His girlfriend has also been subjected to unwarranted hostility.
“When it comes to gambling, it obviously has created an uptick in disgruntled people online. I receive messages after every game, even when I pitch well, because of prop bets and performance expectations. People wager hundreds of dollars and become irrational when things don’t go their way,” Giolito noted.
Growing Threats Plaguing MLB Players
It’s not just Giolito who has encountered such troubling situations. Last month, police in Texas identified a man who allegedly directed death threats toward Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and his family. The man, reportedly intoxicated while placing bets, threatened McCullers after losing money.
In light of the threats, the Astros organization arranged for security to protect McCullers and his family. McCullers shared the emotional challenges he faced in explaining the situation to his young daughter. “She asked me when I came home, ‘Daddy, like, what is threats? Who wants to hurt us? Who wants to hurt me?’ Those conversations are tough to deal with,” he recounted.

Giolito pointed out that while sports betting is not new, the accessibility of players through social media has exacerbated the situation. He believes that distancing oneself from social media could provide some protection, though it does not eliminate the threat athletes might face.
“It only goes so far,” he mentioned. “Is it going to take a player getting assaulted in front of their apartment building by some disgruntled bettor for real action to be taken?” This question looms large as the issue of harassment continues to evolve.
