The America First Policy Institute (AFPI) recently introduced the Farmers First Agenda, with key support from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins. Their goal is to increase the availability of farm-fresh foods in American homes and schools.

This initiative, which outlines strategic guidance for federal and state policies, also looks to engage with the private sector. Ultimately, it seeks to reshape the agricultural landscape to better serve American families.

Among the goals highlighted in the agenda is the establishment of responsible nutrition policies as part of a broader effort to make America healthy again. This movement, aptly dubbed Make America Healthy Again, aims to prioritize health and wellness in the dietary choices available to the public.

Kip Tom, the former Trump ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture, has taken a leadership role as the vice-chair of the Farmers First Agenda. In an interview, Tom expressed a favorable outlook on the initiative, which he believes signals a renaissance in American agriculture.

Farmers across the nation are embracing this movement, engaging in discussions aimed at transforming food production and consumption habits. Tom highlighted that despite the increased variety of grocery store offerings compared to previous generations, there remains a pressing need for consumers to understand the health benefits of incorporating more red meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables into their diets.

Dana Cavalea, the owner of Freedom Farms, shared insights about the ongoing Make America Healthy Again push. He noted a growing consumer desire to learn about the origins of their food, emphasizing that producing his own meat allowed him to witness significant improvements in quality.

Notably, Cavalea remarked on the notable differences in color, flavor, and taste profile when comparing his products to conventionally sourced meats. This led him to question the quality of the food he had consumed over the years.

Tom reassured consumers of the safety of American agriculture, which remains one of the safest food supplies globally, primarily due to stringent regulations. However, he also acknowledged that many of these regulations have become burdensome for both consumers and farmers alike.

Jonathan Shell, a fifth-generation farmer and Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner, echoed these sentiments. He pointed out that excessive bureaucratic red tape and unfavorable trade agreements complicate the ability to supply fresh food to school lunch programs and family dinner tables.

Shell emphasized the readiness of farmers and ranchers across the country to provide healthy and local products. He stated that they are fully equipped with the necessary land and expertise to fulfill community needs for fresh fruits, vegetables, and quality meat.

The Shell family operates Shell Farms and Greenhouses in Garrard County, where they raise cattle and grow a variety of crops. In discussions about incorporating farm-fresh foods into school systems, Shell expressed the hope that the initiative would lead to widespread access to nutritious options, starting with whole milk and fresh produce.

Tom reiterated the importance of fixing the supply chain and fostering innovation to ensure that the United States remains a leading global supplier of food, fiber, and energy. With vast stretches of fertile farmland and nearly 14,000 miles of navigable waterways, America possesses unmatched agricultural potential.
