On a fateful night in August 1969, celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring faced the Manson Family with unmatched bravery, defending his friends until his last breath. This act of courage has been brought to light nearly 60 years later by Sebring’s nephew, Anthony DiMaria, who aims to illuminate his uncle’s legacy and the events that took place at 10050 Cielo Drive.
On the night of August 8-9, 1969, a tragic intersection of fame and infamy occurred in Los Angeles. The horrific murders of actress Sharon Tate, who was heavily pregnant, along with Abigail Folger, Voytek Frykowski, and Steven Parent horrified the nation. In the days that followed, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca were also brutally killed. These heinous acts left an indelible mark on American culture and crime history.
DiMaria now seeks to correct misconceptions surrounding Sebring’s actions during that chaotic night. He joins forces with author Marshall Terrill to produce the book titled “Jay Sebring: Cutting to the Truth”, which explores not only Sebring’s life and his contributions as a groundbreaking stylist in Hollywood, but also the tragic circumstances of his murder.
Though Sebring’s life ended tragically, DiMaria notes that he should be remembered for his accomplishments rather than the gruesome manner of his death. DiMaria reflected on his uncle’s extraordinary life, stating, “The last moments during the most unspeakable situations speak volumes about his character. Jay fought valiantly against evil; he deserves to be recognized as an unsung hero in one of the most notorious cases in U.S. history.”
DiMaria was only three years old when Sebring passed away, and the memories he has are laced with a mix of joy and grief. He recalls a poignant moment when he looked at a photograph of Sebring, asking his mother when they could see him again. His mother’s sorrowful response highlighted the enduring wound left by his uncle’s untimely demise.
“Our family worked to protect one another from the horrors that befell us, yet these tragedies were often sensationalized in the media,” DiMaria expressed. “Our pain was treated as entertainment rather than a personal tragedy.”
As a young man eager to learn more about his famous uncle, DiMaria uncovered many significant stories about Sebring. Widely regarded as an influential figure in the world of men’s grooming, Sebring became trusted by some of Hollywood’s brightest stars, including Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen. His celebrity clientele further solidified his reputation as a pioneering hairstylist in Hollywood.
Terrill explained an iconic memory involving musician Jim Morrison, who sought Sebring’s help to achieve a striking new look. “Morrison arrived at Jay’s salon with a photo of Alexander the Great, asking, ‘I want you to make me look like him.’ That marked the start of a memorable relationship between Sebring and many stars of the era,” Terrill added.
As Sebring made his mark on the film industry, he also forged a friendship with Bruce Lee. Known for his martial arts expertise, Lee turned to Sebring as an advocate during his career, further underscoring the stylist’s significance in the Hollywood scene.
“Jay supported Bruce when he was vying for roles in film,” Terrill shared. “Sebring’s endorsement led Lee to land the role of Kato in ‘The Green Hornet’ after initially facing skepticism.” This testimony of support reveals the many facets of Sebring’s character beyond his profession.
Among Sebring’s closest companions was Sharon Tate, who he once dated. Their relationship remained strong even after Tate married director Roman Polanski. Despite the changes in their personal lives, they maintained a supportive bond. According to Terrill, “It’s believed that Sebring’s connection with Tate was still meaningful, and on that tragic night, it was only natural for him to be there with her.”
On the night of the murders, Sebring exhibited remarkable bravery while facing the Manson followers. Manson, a failed musician turned cult leader, orchestrated these killings as part of a deranged plan. Motivated by a twisted interpretation of the Beatles’ song “Helter Skelter,” he targeted Hollywood celebrities as part of an apocalyptic vision.
DiMaria sheds light on the composition of the Manson Family, asserting, “The label of a ‘hippie cult’ diminishes the horrific nature of their actions. They were not merely followers but cold-blooded killers whose crimes had devastating effects. They delighted in torturing their victims and ultimately received infamy as a result of their horrific acts.”
On that dreadful night, Sebring tried to reason with the intruders, emphasizing Tate’s pregnancy. In a moment of valiant impulse, Sebring charged at Tex Watson, one of the Manson killers, who was brandishing a weapon. Tragically, Sebring was overpowered, and his attempt to fight back only intensified the terror he faced.
Watson shot Sebring before subjecting him to further attacks. Even in suffering, Sebring displayed extraordinary bravery, continuing to fight against overwhelming odds. Though he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, Sebring’s final efforts to protect his friends resonate with courage and heroism.
Despite the tragedy of that night, Manson and his followers garnered much media attention and even notoriety. DiMaria criticized this situation, stating, “It’s concerning how the narrative surrounding these killers became glamorized, reducing them to ‘rock star’ status while failing to honor the lives they destroyed. Jay’s story is vital to counteract this narrative, as it highlights the truth behind his courage.”
In the legal battles that followed, the state’s prison system grappled with the implications of legal rulings regarding Manson and his followers. Manson passed away in 2018, and while many of his followers have been released on parole, DiMaria continues to advocate for keeping them behind bars.
Ultimately, Anthony DiMaria wants his uncle, Jay Sebring, to be remembered not for the tragedies of his murder but for the remarkable life he led and the dreams he chased. “He came to Hollywood with ambition and creativity, leaving behind a legacy of courage and talent,” DiMaria emphasized. “Jay would want us all to live our lives with passion, seeking the best in ourselves and others, as he did. His journey should inspire us all to strive for excellence in whatever path we choose.”
