Charlie Kirk was a colleague and contributor at Salem Media. He was someone I knew well enough to exchange texts and emails, although we were not close friends. Kirk, renowned for founding Turning Point USA, inspired many through his dedication to conservative principles. His dedication to these values resonated deeply with those around him, especially Dennis Prager, his mentor, and the motivational force behind his recent book.
Dennis Prager experienced a devastating health setback late last year but is currently on the path to recovery. According to Allen Estrin, Prager’s close associate, Kirk frequently visited him during his hospital stays. In light of recent tragic events, Dennis visibly summoned strength to share his grief over Kirk’s assassination. Prager is a moral beacon, influencing both men and women, particularly the youth. It is evident that Kirk held deep respect for Prager, a sentiment not often shared for many.
If Charlie Kirk had belonged to the Jewish community, the period of mourning, known as Sitting Shiva, would have concluded. Kirk was a significant supporter of Israel and religious liberty. Consequently, he would have received an outpouring of love and respect from Jewish friends and admirers globally. The profound grief expressed by both evangelicals and Catholics over his loss is remarkable yet unsurprising. The depth of this mourning speaks volumes about his broad influence across various communities.
Many recognize Kirk primarily as a political leader and ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump. At Salem Media, his colleagues viewed him as an exceptional force in numerous arenas. The implications of losing a dynamic young leader like Kirk, who did not pursue public office but aimed to strengthen the Constitution and the outreach of the Gospel, represent a new reality for our Republic. It leaves many questioning what lies ahead.
Turning Point USA is certain to continue its mission, buoyed by a new generation ready to uphold Kirk’s legacy. Among them are his articulate wife, Erika, and friend Alex Marlow. Kirk demonstrated a commitment to revitalizing the American commitment to ordered liberty. He envisioned a public square where passionate factions could foster dialogue rather than mere conflict. Sadly, this ideal was seen as a threat by some who prefer to impose their will instead.
Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett shared insights during a recent conversation about Kirk. She remarked that his tragic assassination should serve as a turning point for society, prompting reflection on our current state. Barrett referenced a G.K. Chesterton quote emphasizing the importance of argument without descending into quarrels. She highlighted that Kirk consistently engaged with differing viewpoints, something that many fail to do today.
Barrett continued, drawing attention to the significance of discussing ideas rather than attacking individuals. She noted the risk that verbal confrontations could escalate into something far more serious, a trend that should concern us all. She underscored that real engagement with the other side fosters understanding and dialogue, which Kirk epitomized.
I first met Charlie a dozen years ago at Colorado Christian University, where I was invited to teach high school students about the Constitution. This opportunity, facilitated by former U.S. Senator Bill Armstrong and State Senator John Andrews, allowed students to engage with the principles undergirding our nation’s founding. Alongside their academic pursuits, they also attended the Western Conservative Summit in Denver.
One of the brilliant elements introduced by Senator Armstrong was inviting Charlie to share his vision with our students. At that time, Charlie was just 18 or 19 years old, and his organization was still in its infancy. However, when he arrived to present, he captivated the audience, igniting a passion for political engagement among his peers. Kirk had a natural charisma that was undeniable, something that simply cannot be taught.
Over the years, our paths crossed repeatedly, especially while working at Salem. Kirk was always eager to learn and grow. I often heard from colleagues about his thirst for knowledge and his involvement in discussions at institutions like Hillsdale College. He pushed me to maintain the Hillsdale Dialogues, reflecting his relentless quest for wisdom.
Throughout his journey, Kirk married his wife, who now grieves a profound loss. Together, they welcomed two beautiful children. Despite his youth, Kirk became a pivotal figure among noteworthy Republicans, from President Trump to local school board members, all while fostering a new generation of political leaders.
According to Allen Estrin, Kirk had already reached impressive heights, comparable to Rush Limbaugh, yet he had only tapped into less than 40% of his potential. This realization underscores the tragedy of his untimely departure. Kirk’s embodiment of informed and engaged citizenship lay the groundwork for a renewed political landscape, vital for the health and future of our democracy.
Dynamic young leaders continue to emerge, including figures like Vice President Vance and Senators Cruz and Rubio. Their commitment to constitutional principles and religious liberty remains steadfast, reflecting Kirk’s legacy. Yet, as we honor his life and contributions, it is appropriate to recognize the void left behind. As we navigate the challenges ahead, the lessons from Kirk’s life emphasize the importance of engagement, dialogue, and understanding across divides.
