Don Hasselbeck, a celebrated Super Bowl champion and tight end, passed away at the age of 70 following a cardiac arrest at his home, as confirmed by his son on Monday. His contributions to the NFL over nine years have left a lasting impact on both the sport and his family.
Matt Hasselbeck, the former NFL quarterback and son of Don, took to X to share heartfelt memories of his father. He expressed significant admiration for Don’s role as a husband, father, and mentor.
In his poignant post, Matt remarked, “He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller. Despite being an All-American at Colorado and a Super Bowl Champion with the Raiders, what we are most proud of is the leader he was for our family.”
Matt emphasized the importance of family values in their lives, stating, “He helped set our feet on solid ground. Married to and in love with our mom, Betsy, for 50 years, they built their house on the rock of Jesus Christ.” Don’s dedication to his family was reflected in the prayer journals he meticulously maintained, filled with the names and needs of loved ones.
Hasselbeck was selected in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He played with the Patriots until 1983, before being traded to the Los Angeles Raiders where he contributed significantly to the team’s success.
During his tenure with the Raiders, he participated in all playoff games, eventually leading the team to a Super Bowl victory against the Washington Redskins. Known for his solid performances, he appeared in 14 games that season before retiring after stints with the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants, ending a commendable NFL career.
This past week, Matt expressed the emotional void left by his father’s passing, saying, “There is a 6’ 7″ hole in our hearts. He will be so missed by so many. We are beyond grateful that he was our dad and look forward to Heaven and being all together again.”
His two sons, Matt and Tim, both followed in their father’s footsteps, playing in the NFL. They, too, carry on the legacy of excellence that Don established during his playing days.
Throughout his career, Don Hasselbeck recorded an impressive 107 receptions for 1,542 yards and scored 18 touchdowns across 123 games. His robust performance on the field made him a notable figure in NFL history.
Don Haaselbeck’s legacy extends beyond the football field. He exemplified values of family and faith, leaving behind memories cherished by his loved ones and fans alike. His life’s work, characterized by care for family and dedication to sport, resonates deeply in the hearts of those who knew him.
This tribute to Don not only highlights his achievements as a player but also emphasizes the enduring influence he had as a father and a leader. The legacy of Don Hasselbeck will be remembered not just in the statistics he posted but also in the love and respect he garnered throughout his life.
