Joey Molland, the last remaining member of the iconic Welsh rock band Badfinger, has passed away at the age of 77. His death occurred on Saturday, March 1, and was confirmed by Paul Davie, Molland’s long-time friend and social media manager.
Molland died as a result of complications related to diabetes and pneumonia. He had been hospitalized for over three months leading up to his passing, a period that worried his family and friends.
In a heartfelt message shared on March 2, Badfinger’s official Facebook page announced Molland’s passing. The statement reflected the loss felt by fans and family alike. It read, “Well, the day we never wanted to see has arrived. Joey (Joseph Charles) Molland passed away last night, surrounded by Mary (his partner), his two sons, and other family members at 11:39pm CST.”
The post conveyed the shock experienced by those close to the musician. The statement continued, “Needless to say, although I knew the situation was bad, it was still a shock to the system. I’m sure if you’re reading this for the first time, it’s a shock to yours as well. Thank you, Joey, for keeping the band’s music alive for so long and for being a friend to us all.”
A few months before his death, Mary Joyce, Molland’s partner, initiated a fundraising campaign to support him during his health struggles. A message on the GoFundMe page highlighted Molland’s declining health, stating, “Joey was vaguely ill throughout the fall, and then in early December acquired a very bad bacterial infection due to his diabetes. The infection caused septicemia and traveled through his body, causing harm in multiple critical organs and bones.”
Molland’s career took a significant turn when he joined Badfinger in 1969 alongside Pete Ham, Tom Evans, and Mike Gibbins. The band soared to fame in the 1970s, delivering timeless hits like “Baby Blue,” “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” and “Without You.” Badfinger was notably the first band signed to The Beatles’ label, Apple Records.
Paul McCartney, a member of The Beatles, penned the band’s debut hit single, “Come and Get It,” leaving a lasting mark on their legacy and that of the rock genre. Throughout his career, Molland contributed to various projects, including participation in notable solo albums by members of The Beatles.
Molland worked on significant Beatles-related projects, including George Harrison’s celebrated album “All Things Must Pass” and John Lennon’s iconic album “Imagine.” His contributions to the music industry went beyond Badfinger, as he collaborated with various artists and participated in numerous live performances throughout his career.
In later years, Molland released several solo albums and engaged in live performances that showcased both his original music and tributes to The Beatles. His passion for music and dedication to his fans remained evident until the end of his life.
Davie expressed his deep admiration for Molland in a recent interview, stating, “I owe him so much. He always believed in me.” This sentiment reflects how Molland made those around him feel appreciated and valued, further showcasing his influence in the music community.
Fans often queued for hours to meet him, with Molland’s signing line reportedly surpassing those of other stars at festivals. Davie recalled, “Whenever they had signings, they would have some big name stars from the Beatles world, but Joey’s line at the signing table was always five times longer than everybody else’s because they wanted that special face time.”
This connection with fans highlights the warmth and charisma that Molland brought to his interactions, leaving an indelible mark on many lives.
Joey Molland’s passing signifies the end of an era for Badfinger fans and rock enthusiasts. His contributions to music were not just limited to his time with Badfinger but also extended to his collaborative work with Beatles members and other musicians throughout his life. The legacy he leaves behind will continue to inspire future generations of artists.
As we remember Joey Molland, it is essential to celebrate his achievements and the joy he brought to countless fans through his music. His enduring spirit will undoubtedly live on through the songs that touched the hearts of many.
