Representative Greg Steube from Florida expressed strong discontent with the Senate parliamentarian, arguing that this unelected official should not have the authority to determine the fate of President Trump’s legislative proposals. This statement was made during an interview with Fox News Channel, which garnered the approval of the former president.
On Thursday morning, anger spread among conservative circles after Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that several important modifications to Medicaid, included in the Senate GOP’s rendition of Trump’s bill, did not comply with Senate Rules. Republican Senator Roger Marshall from Kansas openly called for MacDonough’s replacement due to her decisions.
During a guest appearance on FOX Report, host Jon Scott inquired about Steube’s position on whether MacDonough should be overruled or possibly dismissed. Steube unequivocally supported Marshall’s demand for MacDonough’s removal.
“Yes, I have called for her to be fired,” Steube stated. “One unelected individual, appointed over a decade ago, should not decide what remains and what is eliminated from significant legislation.”
Steube emphasized that elected lawmakers, chosen by their constituents, should hold the power to make these crucial decisions, rather than a parliamentarian. His comments reflect a broader frustration within the Republican Party, which currently controls both the House and the Senate, regarding MacDonough’s rulings.
Notably, MacDonough was appointed by the late Harry Reid, a former Senate Majority Leader from the Democratic Party.
The backlash intensified as conservatives, including Steube, expressed their discontent regarding the influence of unelected officials in legislative processes. Reports indicate significant frustration among Republicans, who feel their legislative agenda is at risk due to MacDonough’s decisions.
Steube queried Senate Majority Leader John Thune from South Dakota why MacDonough had not been replaced with a Republican appointee. “We have certainly called for that,” he noted. “Thune affirmed he would not pursue that route, so the party intends to move forward despite these hurdles.”
Scott pointed out that MacDonough has stated her role is to interpret the rules impartially, creating a perception that she is merely a neutral observer. However, when questioned about whether MacDonough’s rulings seem to favor Democrats, Steube highlighted her appointment by a Democratic leader as a potential conflict of interest.
“The House passed provisions that a majority elected by the people supported, only to see them struck down by a person appointed by Harry Reid,” he stated. “This does not reflect the desires of the American electorate.”
Following this heated debate, Trump later took to Truth Social to express his support for Steube’s position. “Great Congressman Greg Steube is 100% correct,” the former president wrote. “An unelected Senate Staffer should not be permitted to undermine the Republican Bill. We need tremendous reforms to be kept in.”
This turmoil around the Senate parliamentarian reflects a growing tension within the Republican Party as they navigate the complexities of legislative maneuvering while aiming to uphold their agenda.
The ongoing controversy underscores the precarious position Republican lawmakers find themselves in. With vital parts of their legislative strategies being impeded by the Senate parliamentarian, party members must consider their next moves carefully. The demand for MacDonough’s replacement with a more sympathetic appointee illustrates the high-stakes game being played within Washington.
As the legislative battle continues, the Republican Party will have to balance their internal dynamics with the broader political landscape. Steube’s comments reflect the sentiments of many conservatives who believe that elected representatives must reclaim control over the legislative process.
Ultimately, much remains at stake as the GOP seeks to advance its agenda amidst growing frustrations with unelected officials exercising significant influence over key legislative outcomes.
