Nehls made his decision public following discussions with his family during the Thanksgiving holiday. He has represented Texas’s 22nd Congressional District in the U.S. House since 2021.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Nehls expressed his gratitude for his years in public service. He stated, “After more than 30 years in law enforcement, serving and protecting my community as a police officer, constable, Fort Bend County Sheriff, an Army veteran, and six years representing this district in Congress, I have made the decision, after conversations with my beautiful bride and my girls over the Thanksgiving holiday, to focus on my family and return home after this Congress.”

Nehls maintains a close relationship with former President Donald Trump, informing him of his plans before making the announcement. He shared this detail during his candidacy disclosure.

Maintaining Strong Connections

“Before making this decision, I called President Trump personally to let him know of my plans,” Nehls stated. He acknowledged Trump’s significant role in supporting his district and described the former president as a true friend. Nehls added, “Serving this country in the military, serving our community in law enforcement, and serving this district in Congress has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your prayers.”

Nehls, 57, has been a vocal advocate for Trump’s immigration policies, including a highly publicized push for mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. Recently, the House Judiciary Committee supported his legislation aimed at easing restrictions surrounding deportations. In the Senate, Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, introduced a parallel initiative.

I’m ready to take up that fight.”
