A repeat felon involved in the tragic murder of a Rhodes College student in 2021 received a significant prison sentence this week. Rainess Holmes, age 40, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges on Monday, leading to a 20-year sentence, which he must serve in its entirety. Additionally, he received a nine-year sentence for three separate burglary incidents.
His criminal history extends back to 2005, making him a familiar figure in the justice system. Holmes was one of four suspects who invaded a Memphis residence, where several college students were staying, including Andrew “Drew” Rainer, a 22-year-old senior. This incident unfolded early on the morning of October 3, 2021, at approximately 5:40 a.m., according to records from the Shelby County court.
In chilling reports, survivors recounted how the perpetrators entered the home. Dressed in hoodies that concealed their identities, the intruders forcibly kicked down the door, demanding that the students hand over their electronics.
Andrew Rainer found himself in a harrowing situation as he was instructed to provide the passcode for his iPad. He was shot when he could not comply, as detailed in the arrest affidavit. The intruders fled the scene with a variety of electronic devices, including phones, gaming systems, and video games that belonged to the residents of the home.
When Memphis police arrived at the scene, they discovered Rainer at the base of a staircase with a gunshot wound. His tragic death marked a somber moment for those who knew him.
Following the incident, one resident was able to track the location of the stolen iPad to a nearby hotel. This led authorities to establish a perimeter, hoping to capture the fleeing suspect. Holmes managed to elude the police temporarily; he was reported to have jumped a drainage ditch while escaping the area. His status as one of Tennessee’s Most Wanted was solidified until his eventual capture on October 5, just two days after the crime.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office noted that they collaborated closely with Rainer’s family throughout the legal proceedings. They expressed gratitude for the family’s support and presence in court during the sentencing phase.
While Holmes has been charged, he was not the individual who fatally shot Rainer. Investigators are still on the lookout for the other three suspects linked to the home invasion and the subsequent murder. A reward of $5,000 is currently being offered by Crime Stoppers for any information leading to additional arrests in the case.
In the wake of this tragedy, a memorial fund called “Live Like Drew” has been established in Honor of Andrew Rainer. This fund reflects the qualities that made Rainer a beloved figure among his peers. Described as someone who loved with deep intensity, he was known for his immense courage and selflessness. His talents spanned various interests, from music—playing in an 80s rock band—to avid reading and being an Eagle Scout. Rainer was also a devoted member of the Catholic Church, showcasing his commitment to his faith.
The poignant message from his obituary states that Drew was a loving son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. Rainer was characterized as kind, cheerful, intelligent, and outgoing, embodying traits that made him well-loved by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. His sudden loss leaves a void felt deeply by many.
The tragic nature of this incident has heightened awareness about safety in college towns and the vulnerabilities that students may face. The community has rallied in support of Rainer’s family and friends, emphasizing the need for stronger protective measures for students living away from home.
As the investigation continues, the hope is that more information will surface, leading to the apprehension of all individuals involved in this heinous crime. Justice for Andrew Rainer remains a priority for the Memphis community that has been touched by this heartbreaking event.
