Republican Activist Launches Campaign for Key Swing District in New Hampshire

FIRST ON FOX: A prominent Republican figure who supported Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is setting her sights on a crucial congressional seat in New Hampshire. Elizabeth Girard, the former co-chair of Trump’s 2024 campaign in the state, announced her candidacy for the open 1st Congressional District on Monday.

The 1st District has not seen a Republican victory in over ten years, making Girard’s entry into the race strategic. She aims to end the GOP’s losing streak in what has become a key battleground for both parties.

Girard expressed her commitment to delivering positive results for New Hampshire, stating, “I’ll work with President Trump and my colleagues to ensure our state’s future stays bright for generations to come.” This message accompanied a video announcement shared nationwide, marking her campaign’s formal launch.

An Attractive Target for Republicans

The 1st Congressional District stretches from Manchester to Portsmouth and extends northward towards the scenic White Mountains. Republicans view this district as one of their top targets in the upcoming elections, as they strive not only to maintain but also to expand their slim majority in the House of Representatives during the midterm elections.

This area once held the reputation as a premier congressional swing district. In recent years, however, Democratic candidates have achieved five consecutive electoral victories in the district, with the last four elections being won by current Representative Chris Pappas. With Pappas running for the Senate seat vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the opportunity to flip this House seat may be within reach for Republicans.

Girard’s Vision and Priorities

In her campaign announcement, Girard outlined her aspirations to bring what she calls “results-driven, commonsense leadership to Washington.” Her aims include amplifying New Hampshire’s distinct voice on a national level. Girard’s key priorities focus on economic issues critical to her constituents.

She supports lowering the cost of living and healthcare, fostering an environment where small businesses and innovators can thrive, and providing essential care for veterans and seniors who have served and defended the nation.

Competitors in a Crowded Republican Field

Girard is stepping into a competitive Republican primary that features several notable candidates. Among them are auto dealer and real estate developer Anthony DiLorenzo, former New Hampshire GOP vice chair Hollie Noveletsky—who previously finished second in the 2024 Republican congressional primary—state Representative Brian Cole, and Melissa Bailey, the Vice Chair of the Bedford Republican Committee.

A Robust Democratic Response

In response to the Republican influx, the Democratic field is equally crowded. Seven Democrats are vying for their party’s nomination, including Stefany Shaheen, a former Portsmouth city councilor and daughter of Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Another prominent candidate is Maura Sullivan, the New Hampshire Democratic Party vice chair, who previously ran against Pappas in the 2018 primary and has a military background as a U.S. Marine.

Girard’s Path to Politics

Girard is not new to political involvement. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire in 2016, she previously served as the president of the New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women (NHFRW). Although she faced setbacks, such as an unsuccessful run for the open Republican National Committeewoman position, her political engagement deepened over time.

Her endorsement of Trump in December 2023 at a campaign rally marked a significant moment in her political journey. At that time, she was still chairing the NHFRW, which historically abstained from endorsing candidates in GOP primaries. Following her endorsement, she resigned from her position to take a more active role as a co-chair of Trump’s campaign in New Hampshire.

Looking Ahead

As Elizabeth Girard embarks on her campaign, the political landscape in New Hampshire promises to be intensely competitive. With national attention focusing on the 1st Congressional District, her candidacy may play a pivotal role in determining Republican chances to regain this vital swing seat.

Her ability to resonate with voters will be tested against not only her fellow Republicans in the primary but also the strong Democratic challengers anticipating a fierce battle as they seek to retain a seat that has historically swayed between parties. As the campaign unfolds, both national and local dynamics will play crucial roles in shaping the electoral landscape.
