FIRST ON FOX: A Republican congressman has taken steps to remove three Democratic colleagues from their committee positions after they faced allegations of unlawfully entering a federal detention facility in New Jersey to advocate for illegal immigrants.
Representative Buddy Carter from Georgia introduced a resolution on Tuesday to displace Representatives Robert Menendez, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and LaMonica McIver, all from New Jersey, from their respective committee assignments.
The three New Jersey Democrats participated in a protest that involved entering Delaney Hall Detention Center during the arrival of a bus transporting detainees.
The Department of Homeland Security accused the lawmakers of breaching security and endangering both law enforcement personnel and detainees, labeling the incident as a political stunt.
However, the lawmakers, along with their supporters, argued that they were fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities and claimed that ICE agents had assaulted McIver and Watson Coleman during the incident.
Carter expressed his views, stating, “The radical left has lost their minds – they would rather invade an ICE facility to defend criminal illegal immigrants than represent their own constituents.” He emphasized the seriousness of his legislation, saying, “This behavior constitutes an assault on our brave ICE agents and undermines the rule of law. The three members involved in this stunt do not deserve to sit on committees alongside serious lawmakers.”
The proposed legislation aims to remove Watson Coleman from the House Appropriations Committee, Menendez from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and McIver from the House committees on Small Business and Homeland Security.
Carter’s office is currently engaging with other House Republicans to assess their support for this resolution.

In a statement following the incident, DHS remarked, “These members of Congress storming into a detention facility goes beyond bizarre political stunt and puts the safety of our law enforcement agents and the detainees at risk.”
DHS further asserted, “Members of Congress are not above the law and cannot illegally break into detention facilities. Had these members requested a tour, we would have facilitated one.”
In contrast, the Democrats have challenged the Republican portrayal of events.
Watson Coleman remarked on social media, “The idea we ‘stormed’ a heavily guarded federal detention center is absurd – just more lies from the most dishonest administration in history.”
McIver added on the social platform, “This is laid out clearly on ICE’s own website. What happened today, from the manhandling of me and my colleagues to the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, should never have happened.”
High-ranking Democratic figures, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York, have also defended the three lawmakers’ actions.
Jeffries stated, “The concerns of elected officials about this unsanctioned facility will not be silenced by the Trump administration’s attempts to intimidate the public. We will never bend the knee.” He urged for transparency regarding agents involved in the incident, asserting, “The masked agents who physically accosted two Congresswomen must be identified immediately, and any trumped-up charges against Mayor Baraka must be dropped.”
