Republican Lawmakers Challenge Congress to Prevent Government Shutdown

FIRST ON FOX: Two congressional Republicans are stepping up their efforts to keep the government operational, insisting that their colleagues remain in Washington, D.C., to ensure it happens.

Senator James Lankford from Oklahoma and Representative Jodey Arrington from Texas are preparing to introduce a legislative measure aimed at compelling lawmakers to stay in the capital until they pass a short-term government funding extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), or finalize spending bills to avert a partial government shutdown.

The current situation is tense as Congress has yet to formulate a strategy to prevent a shutdown before the looming September 30 deadline. Additionally, both parties have begun their traditional blame game regarding ownership of any potential closures.

As of now, the Senate has moved forward with three spending bills, but the House has only passed two, despite efforts to advance the Energy and Water appropriations bill soon.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Lankford expressed concern as the nation’s debt surpasses $37 trillion, declaring that Congress cannot continue to avoid making difficult decisions necessary for financial stability.

Lankford pointedly stated that shutting down the government does not resolve the debt crisis; rather, it exacerbates the issue. He stressed that maintaining Congress in Washington until budget resolutions are made would create a sense of urgency among lawmakers, shifting the pressure away from American families and vital services.

If Congress fails to reach an agreement to keep the government funded, the proposed legislation by Lankford and Arrington would initiate an automatic continuing resolution on rolling 14-day periods. This would remain in effect until lawmakers either pass all twelve appropriations bills or reach a compromise on a stopgap funding bill.

The legislation aims not only to keep Congress and their staff in Washington but also includes members of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) until they fulfill their responsibilities.

This measure would prohibit any motions to adjourn or recess for longer than 23 hours, mandate daily quorum calls to ensure member attendance, and restrict consideration of any other legislation until the CR or spending bills are enacted.

Arrington highlighted the disparity between the real world and Congressional operations by stating that in everyday life, failing to perform one’s job has consequences. She emphasized that when Congress does not pass appropriations on time, hardworking Americans bear the burden—particularly taxpayers, seniors, and military personnel.

He stated it is his hope that any forthcoming CR would be straightforward, allowing time to complete the regular appropriations process effectively.
