FIRST ON FOX: Representative Andy Ogles from Tennessee has introduced a resolution aimed at punishing Democratic lawmakers who disrupted House floor proceedings during the censure of Representative Al Green from Texas on Thursday.
Ogles stated in an interview with Fox News Digital that the disruption reflects a broader failure of the Biden administration. He remarked, “We have a country to run. The failed policies of Joe Biden are why they lost the House, the Senate, and the presidency. They can lick their wounds all day, but they still have to behave on the House floor.”
He emphasized the importance of respect and civility in political discourse, expressing his frustration by saying, “We can disagree on issues and politics, but we’re going to respect one another, and I’m tired of this crap.”
Ogles’ resolution specifically targets the Democratic representatives responsible for temporarily plunging the House into chaos during the censure process.
Ogles told Fox News Digital that he plans to classify the resolution as “privileged.” This designation compels House leaders to address the measure within two legislative days. The resolution may be brought to a vote as early as next week, where Ogles intends to discuss it with House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana.
In a surprising turn, nearly all House Democrats, except for twelve, voted against censure for Green, who had been vocal during President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night. Notably, ten Democrats sided with Republicans in reprimanding Green, while two, including Green himself, opted for a “present” vote.
Just before the formal censure was read to Green, House Democrats caused a commotion by gathering around him and singing “We Shall Overcome.” This protest resulted in House Speaker Johnson calling for a recess after multiple attempts to restore order failed.
The situation escalated further as tension mounted between a small group of Democrats and Republicans, with shouts exchanged across the aisle. One Republican was overheard labeling the Democrats’ behavior as “embarrassing.”
Ogles’ resolution, which Fox News Digital was able to obtain, requires the House Sergeant-at-Arms to determine which members ignored the speaker’s directive to disperse from the well of the House. The resolution stipulates that upon submitting this list to the speaker, those members would be removed from any standing committee assignments for the remainder of the current Congress.
Ogles made his intentions to file the resolution known on social media platform X.
He expressed confidence in Speaker Johnson’s character, stating, “The speaker, he’s a good man, he’s a Christian man. He has a kind heart. With grace, he gave them the opportunity to stop and they refuse to do so. So, look, if you want to act like a petulant child on the House floor and you’re given a warning and a reprimand, and you choose not to stop, then actions need to be taken.”
Initially, Green faced removal from Trump’s address due to his interruptions. During the president’s speech, Green shouted, “You have no mandate!” as Trump highlighted Republican successes in the House, Senate, and the White House.
Following the incident, Johnson ordered Green’s removal with the assistance of the Sergeant-at-Arms.
When Green later addressed the situation, he maintained a stance of defiance. He stated, “I heard the speaker when he said that I should cease. I did not, and I did not with intentionality. It was not done out of a burst of emotion. I think that on some questions, questions of conscience, you have to be willing to suffer the consequences. And I have said I will. I will suffer whatever the consequences are, because I don’t believe that in the richest country in the world, people should be without good healthcare.”
The recent events underscore a growing concern regarding decorum and civility in Congress. As Democrats and Republicans navigate their differences, maintaining respect for one another becomes increasingly essential.
As the political landscape evolves, initiatives like Ogles’ resolution serve as a reminder of the need for accountability in political conduct. While disagreements will inevitably arise, fostering an environment of mutual respect is crucial for effective governance.
The fallout from this incident may prompt lawmakers to reevaluate their approach to political discourse. As the censure vote and Ogles’ resolution approach, the outcome may define how Congress navigates its partisan divisions moving forward.
