Restoring Voices of Freedom: The Vital Role of VOA for Iran and Beyond

Restoring Voices of Freedom: The Vital Role of VOA for Iran and Beyond

Over the past four decades, I have witnessed the unfulfilled aspirations of the Iranian people, especially since my release from captivity by the Iranian regime. The vibrant, often painful struggles faced by millions in the Iranian diaspora reflect a deep yearning for democracy. Time and again, these individuals have bravely stood up against a regime that has shown itself to be both unpopular and dangerous.

For years, the Voice of America’s Persian service has acted as a beacon of hope in the midst of adversity. It served as a trusted channel for uncensored news and independent analysis, empowering grassroots communities across Iran. During critical moments such as the Green Movement of 2009, the mass protests of 2017-2018, and the recent Women Life Freedom protests, VOA’s broadcasts provided a glimpse into a future free from tyranny. They energized countless men and women willing to risk everything to advocate for our shared democratic values.

However, recent developments have raised serious concerns. An executive order has effectively silenced this crucial lifeline, pulling VOA broadcasts off the air. This decision undermines not only the aspirations of millions of Iranians but also represents a costly retreat from the broader strategy to diminish the influence of one of the world’s most antagonistic forces. The Iranian regime not only conducts operations against its own citizens but also funds and orchestrates attacks against American interests globally.

What is more troubling is the trend reflected in this action. Earlier this year, the dismantling of thousands of international assistance programs occurred, sending a profound signal that investments in global stability and democratic values are being compromised.

The significance of VOA goes beyond mere information dissemination. It directly challenges state propaganda and amplifies voices of dissent in a society yearning for change. The absence of such a platform is a setback not only for those resisting an oppressive regime but also directly affects U.S. interests. The security of the United States is intricately linked to the stability of free and open societies around the world.

Unsurprisingly, authoritarian regimes across the globe have celebrated the demise of VOA. State-run Chinese media recently proclaimed it a victory, referring to VOA as a discarded entity. Russian state television has similarly expressed joy at the program’s termination, fueling the notion that they perceive a weakening of democratic ideals.

These countries understand that the absence of a trusted global information source significantly enhances their propaganda capabilities. By diminishing outlets like VOA, they further entrench anti-democratic values at the expense of democratic nations, including the United States. The end of VOA is viewed as a substantial gain for authoritarianism.

Critics might argue that current domestic challenges should take precedence, particularly during a time of economic instability. However, abandoning VOA and international assistance programs hands over greater influence to authoritarian figures, notably individuals such as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as groups like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Allowing these oppressors to dominate is neither wise nor strategic; it runs contrary to American interests.

Having experienced the consequences of repression firsthand, I can attest to the heavy toll of isolation imposed by the Iranian regime that once held me captive. Today, this regime still represses the hopes of its citizens with extreme force. Nevertheless, the Iranian people’s resilience sends a clear message: they will not be silenced.

For those in Republican leadership, the current moment presents a stark choice. Restoring a voice like VOA and maintaining a strong global presence is not simply an act of support for international initiatives; it is a matter of strategic necessity. By reviving channels of free information, empowering individuals who challenge authoritarian rule, and supporting those who align with democratic values, we can reflect our national interests and stand with those who endeavor for change.

The time has come to craft a new chapter in America’s strategic approach to international assistance programs. These initiatives must champion freedom, uphold human rights, and promote the free exchange of ideas. The future of a democratic Iran and the broader global pro-democracy movement depend on this commitment.
