In our journey to Washington, we share a common mission. Our goal is to champion the interests of Florida families, uphold freedom, and create economic opportunities. This vision aligns closely with that of President Donald Trump.
However, a persistent threat looms over this mission—the Internal Revenue Service, a sprawling and often unaccountable entity that, during Joe Biden’s administration, has become a tool against hardworking Americans.
Significantly, there is a much-needed shift underway.
President Trump’s strategic appointment of Scott Bessent as the new head of the IRS holds promise. Bessent brings a wealth of business experience rather than bureaucratic red tape. His focus on actionable results, taxpayer protection, and eliminating harassment from the IRS aims to benefit every American who strives to adhere to regulations while navigating the complexities of audits.
Under Bessent’s leadership, there have already been moves to remove individuals from the Biden era who exploited the agency for political gain. This initial step is encouraging, yet much work remains ahead.
A recent audit from the Treasury Inspector General indicates a concerning rise in audits targeting taxpayers, with the IRS committed to fulfilling directives from Biden’s 2022 agency guidance.
The next critical phase demands the termination of job-crippling tax policies that the Biden administration imposed on Florida’s families and small businesses. These enduring measures not only burden everyday Americans but also obstruct our economic growth. The primary focus needs to shift towards reducing the IRS’s scope while enhancing its efficiency, ensuring transparency, protecting the privacy of Americans, and bolstering customer service.
The journey towards reform must begin with the abolition of Revenue Ruling 2014-14, a problematic policy that engendered confusion among businesses nationwide. This ruling has compelled entrepreneurs into difficult decisions, often putting them at risk of audits regardless of the path they choose. Such regulations stifle job creation instead of fostering a thriving economic environment.
This situation is not mere speculation. We consistently hear from Floridians across the state, representing both small and large enterprises, that the IRS under Biden has made hiring, investment, and expansion increasingly difficult. Biden’s allocation of $70 billion to bolster the IRS with an additional 87,000 agents has only fueled the anxiety of hardworking families. As a result, there is a pervasive distrust among Floridians towards their government, leading them to feel like they are under constant scrutiny despite their compliance with the law.
This climate of fear undoubtedly hampers job opportunities and undermines the entrepreneurial spirit that defines Florida. Our state, built on innovation and ambition, must not be stifled by overreaching tax policies.
Secretary Bessent understands these challenges. He has vowed to refocus the IRS on its fundamental roles: collecting revenue, safeguarding taxpayer privacy, and serving the public efficiently. There is an urgency to dispense with political maneuvering, ensuring the IRS operates fairly and transparently.
With Trump at the helm and Bessent implementing necessary changes, we now have a genuine opportunity to mend this broken agency. However, completing the task is essential.
This entails abolishing Revenue Ruling 2014-14 and any policies carried over from the Biden administration that punish job creators. Furthermore, it is crucial to put an end to selective enforcement practices that disproportionately target conservative individuals while allowing others to evade accountability.
These reforms can swiftly enhance certainty for families, retirees, and business owners, allowing them the freedom to thrive.
In Florida, we do not seek handouts. We seek the freedom to work hard, create employment, and pursue the American Dream without the persistent presence of the IRS undermining our efforts.
President Trump and Scott Bessent are actively delivering tangible results for the American people, especially in Florida. For these reforms to have lasting impact, Congress must act decisively to support these initiatives and ensure they become permanent. The IRS must transition to an agency that serves the people rather than one that operates as an obstacle.
As we move forward, let us remember that a robust IRS reform will pave the way for increased economic vitality. Together, we can ensure that Florida continues to be a land of opportunity.
