Revealing Final Moments: Paul Reubens Kept Terminal Illness Hidden from Documentary Director Until His Death

Paul Reubens, the beloved actor known for his iconic role as Pee-wee Herman, concealed the fact that he was dying from cancer from Matt Wolf, the director of his recent documentary. This revelation has come to light following Reubens’ passing in 2023 at the age of 70.

The documentary, titled Pee-wee as Himself, features over 40 hours of interviews filmed before his death and is available for streaming on HBO Max. The two-part series offers a deep dive into Reubens’ life, creative journey, and his famous alter ego.

Wolf expressed his surprise at learning about Reubens’ illness, stating, “I was scheduled to do a final interview with him the week after Paul Reubens passed away. We had a conversation just a week before he died.” This stark reality became apparent during a recent discussion with Forbes.

During their conversations, Wolf sensed an underlying health issue, but he did not grasp the severity of Reubens’ condition. “I could tell something was amiss with his health, but I didn’t understand the gravity of it. I had no reason to believe he was terminally ill, yet we had a meaningful conversation that reassured me about moving forward with this film,” he recalled.

The filmmaker later learned of Reubens’ death through social media, along with the general public. Wolf remarked that only a select few close friends were privy to Reubens’ health struggles. Their discussions ranged widely, covering topics such as Reubens’ childhood, relationships, ambitions, and even his brushes with the law, but they notably neglected to address his six-year battle with cancer.

Wolf emphasized Reubens’ eagerness to share his story. “When we first met, he opened the conversation by saying, ‘I want to direct a film myself, but everybody’s advising me against it, and I don’t understand why.'” This marked the beginning of an extensive and engaging dialogue.

He continued, reflecting on their initial meeting, “I told him, ‘Well, I’m here to talk to you about directing a film, so let’s get to know each other and see if we can create an approach that resonates with you.’ This initiated a long and fruitful communication process. I didn’t relate to Paul as a fan in that setting, but rather as someone there to understand his creative vision.”

While Wolf noted he wasn’t sure when Reubens fully placed his trust in him, he mentioned a poignant comment from the actor. “At some point, you just have to take a leap of faith,” Reubens had said. Wolf expressed gratitude for the trust Reubens extended to him throughout this process.

Despite their extensive discussions, there was one lingering question that Wolf felt remained unanswered by Reubens. “I was meticulously working chronologically through Paul’s life during our interviews, and we stopped just before his arrest in Florida,” he explained, alluding to the entertainer’s 1991 incident involving indecent exposure in an adult movie theater.

Reubens was fined for that incident, but it had lasting repercussions on his career. Another arrest in 2001 for misdemeanor possession of child pornography later led to a reduced charge and probation. The documentary explores these controversial moments in the entertainer’s life, particularly in its latter part.

In reflecting on their discussions, Wolf noted, “Paul mentioned these topics in passing during our over 40 hours of dialogue, but I wished to delve deeper into the specifics of his arrest.” His goal was to explore how these events shaped Reubens’ life and career.

Wolf found it crucial for the film to feature Reubens’ voice as he reflected on his career and personal growth. “The day following Paul Reubens’ death, I began reviewing the 1,500-page transcript of our interviews, and I uncovered various layers of significance and meaning that I had not fully appreciated beforehand,” he shared. He also noted that some of Reubens’ last words in the film were particularly poignant.

Reubens reflected in his interview, saying, “All these different emotions, all these various influences and factors, from my childhood, I felt I could somehow give that back.” He expressed a sense of fulfillment in having created something authentic and meaningful, stating, “Nothing would stop me. Nothing would deter me that it would be pure in every way. And I think that’s what it was. It’s part of why I feel so proud of it. Because I delivered that. I’ve lived up to that. Not just for you, but for myself.”

Looking back on their conversations, Wolf acknowledged the significance of what transpired between them, noting that it seemed Reubens engaged in private contemplation of his own mortality. “I realized I was navigating a unique situation that was integral to the film’s narrative. The stakes were higher than I had ever experienced,” Wolf remarked.

Pee-wee as Himself premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, receiving widespread attention for its intimate portrayal of an artist who profoundly influenced the entertainment landscape. As viewers delve into Reubens’ life, the documentary offers a rare glimpse into the world of a man who was both a cultural icon and a private individual battling unseen struggles.
