As reported by a recent feature in a prominent New York newspaper, several laundrobars have emerged in Brooklyn, aiming to redefine the typical laundromat environment into sociable spaces.
However, the concept of combining laundry services with leisure activities is not new. Across the nation, from Oregon to Ohio and Nevada to Oklahoma, unique laundromats have long been enticing customers with their innovative offerings.
Duds n’ Suds: A Classic Example
Duds n’ Suds, located in Reno, Nevada, is one notable establishment that started serving beer, wine, snacks, and even featuring slot machines back in the early 1980s. This unique laundromat has not only built a loyal clientele but even received a nod in a popular animated series in 2021.
Jimmie May, who took over Duds n’ Suds in 2019 with his wife, Brandy Johnson, understands the appeal of this concept. He shared insights into how his laundromat provides extra value to patrons, turning a mundane chore into an enjoyable outing.
“We offer a little extra for people to make it less drudgery,” May explained. He loves seeing husbands sent to do laundry by their wives, only to be pleasantly surprised by the bar’s offerings. “They turn around and they see the bar and they go, ‘Wait, you’ve got beer?’” May added, showcasing how this unexpected feature encourages repeat visits.
Spin Laundry Lounge: A Cozy Alternative
Further west, Spin Laundry Lounge in Portland, Oregon, presents another approach to the laundromat experience. Morgan Gary, co-founder of Spin, aimed to create a sense of comfort and community when establishing the first location in 2014.
“Spin was inspired by my experiences at laundromats and the areas that I wasn’t particularly thrilled about,” Gary remarked. She wanted patrons to feel more like they were in a cozy café than a typical laundromat.
The café quickly gained popularity, attracting not just residents but also travelers looking for a unique laundry experience. “The food and drink element is so important; that is what put us on the map,” she stated.
A Multidimensional Experience
At Spin, visitors can enjoy arcade games and pinball machines while waiting for their laundry. This laundromat was originally a metal factory, and Gary and her partner, Anthony Fusaro, successfully integrated café and laundromat operations for several years. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to pause food and drink services.
In early 2023, a partnership with Brave Neighbor Coffeehouse reignited the café. “Running both sides of the business was a challenge, and the partnership has allowed us to focus on offering the best possible laundry experience,” Gary noted. Their commitment to community involvement is evident in efforts like providing free laundry vouchers to local nonprofits and hosting themed events that emphasize garment care.
Innovation and Community Connection
One of the unique aspects of Spin includes their initiatives for helping others. Gary takes particular joy in collecting and laundering the stray socks left behind by customers, donating them to shelters in need. “It’s our little way of being able to give them something useful that might just go in the trash otherwise,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Spin plans to host more community events and potentially expand its delivery service, underscoring their dedication to improving the laundry experience further. Gary expressed her enthusiasm about witnessing similar businesses emerge in the industry, indicating a growing recognition of the opportunities in the laundromat sector.

Reflecting on the growth of laundromat bars, Gary said, “When we opened all those years ago, there had been a few before us, but it was a fairly new concept.” She believes that the shift towards making laundry a more enjoyable necessity is essential, as everyone must do laundry at some point, and it should be an experience that brings pleasure rather than drudgery.
Through the creative blending of laundry facilities with relaxing environments, these innovative businesses are redefining how communities perceive the once mundane task of washing clothes.
