This innovative technology captures conversations between doctors and patients, transcribes them in real-time, and compiles detailed clinical notes without interrupting the health consultation.
Dr. Daniel Kortsch serves as the associate chief of artificial intelligence and digital health at Denver Health. He commented on the significant changes brought about by ambient listening since its implementation in his practice during the fall of 2024.
“It truly transforms the doctor-patient dynamic, enabling them to engage as humans rather than just participants in a medical transaction,” Dr. Kortsch stated.
At Denver Health, providers utilize an AI tool called Nabla. This resource is designed to begin transcribing conversations with a single click, offering support in multiple languages as well. Once the appointment concludes, Nabla generates a summary that can easily be integrated into the patient’s medical record.
This progress in healthcare technology arrives at a critical juncture. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the United States faces a projected shortfall of between 57,000 and 72,000 physicians this year. This shortage not only heightens work-related stress but also contributes significantly to physician burnout.
“Our providers utilizing Nabla have reported reduced workloads at home. They spend less time in ‘pajama mode,’” Dr. Kortsch noted, emphasizing the term that refers to doctors working from home in their casual attire.
For patients who may be wary of AI integration in their healthcare, technology companies are keen to assure them of the human oversight involved. AI tools function as an aid, but ultimately, physicians remain in control when it comes to patient outcomes.
“The physician retains complete authority over patient management, ensuring that every interaction aligns with the best interest of the patient,” said Kenneth Harper, head of Dragon Copilot at Microsoft, a provider of medical AI solutions.
Currently, approximately 600 healthcare organizations across states like Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, and Pennsylvania are utilizing Microsoft’s Dragon Copilot, an ambient listening technology. A spokesperson highlighted the tool’s capacity to enhance clinician well-being and boost efficiency while improving patient outcomes through its rapid, precise, and intuitive functionalities.
While artificial intelligence is streamlining workflows for healthcare providers, it also enables patients to engage more fully during consultations. This interaction fosters a more personal experience, allowing patients to feel valued and heard.
Looking ahead, Dr. Kortsch indicated that Denver Health plans to broaden the implementation of this groundbreaking technology beyond doctors. “Healthcare professionals typically choose this career path for meaningful interactions with patients, not for the administrative burdens of note-taking and paperwork. Ambient AI facilitates those interactions,” Dr. Kortsch expressed.
As the U.S. confronts an anticipated shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by the year 2036, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the integration of advanced technology like artificial intelligence could play a vital role in mitigating this crisis.
