A Rhode Island school district has stirred controversy by proposing a staggering fee of $117,132 to a mother requesting access to the curriculum and emails of a teacher who labeled conservative activist Charlie Kirk “a piece of garbage” shortly after Kirk’s assassination on September 10.

In a letter dated September, the law firm representing Barrington Public Schools informed Nicole Solas that fulfilling her public records request would incur this exorbitant cost. The request sought access to teaching materials and emails from social studies teacher Benjamin Fillo.

Solas, who resides in a different school district, is presently enrolled in a private school due to prior legal challenges initiated by the National Education Association Rhode Island. Four years ago, she faced a lawsuit for submitting public records requests related to claims of political indoctrination.

Her records request specifically aimed to obtain emails sent by Fillo from September 1, 2024, onward that included the term “Trump.” This led to the identification of 789 emails, in addition to correspondence dating back to January 1, 2016, that also contained the word “Trump.”

The Financial Breakdown of Request

The billing from the law firm, Henneous Carroll Lombardo LLC, detailed that extracting the emails with the keyword “Trump” would cost $380. Additionally, they assessed the curriculum materials at a staggering $116,033, with the remaining emails adding $719, totaling the substantial fee of $117,132.

In the immediate aftermath of Kirk’s public assassination, Fillo posted a video on social media claiming that Kirk harbored hatred towards the LGBTQ community and women’s rights. In the video, Fillo expressed his disdain, stating, “What a piece of garbage. Look what happens. … Bye, Charlie!”

The controversy surrounding Fillo’s comments has raised significant concerns among parents in the district about transparency and accountability in local education.

Solas conveyed her frustration over the estimated charges in an interview, labeling them exorbitant and unreasonable just to access curriculum materials funded by taxpayers. “We believe that the fee should be zero, since these are resources paid for by the public,” she argued.
