Health Minister Alexandre Padilha has called for heightened vigilance, advising Brazilians to steer clear of colorless spirits. In response to the rising cases, he has announced urgent measures. The government is procuring 2,500 doses of fomepizole, an antidote for methanol poisoning, alongside 12,000 ampoules of medical-grade ethanol. These shipments are set to commence immediately to ensure that affected individuals receive swift medical treatment.

According to the Health Ministry, the majority of the suspected cases are concentrated in São Paulo, although incidents have also been reported in other states like Pernambuco and Mato Grosso do Sul. Nikolaos Loukopoulos, a restaurant owner in São Paulo, noted, “Last night no one bought drinks… even I don’t want to drink. With a beer, we’re fine in this heat. Thais Flores, a dental surgeon visiting Rio from São Paulo, shared her hesitancy when ordering a beer: “I don’t really like beer, but because of the latest news, it’s been my drink of choice.” Meanwhile, Raquel Marques, another visitor, indicated that she still opted for a vodka caipirinha despite the risks, saying, “I’m scared, but we took a chance. The guy said he bought it at the market.” These anecdotes illustrate the conflict between enjoyment and caution in a precarious environment.
