U.S. officials are raising alarms about the potential risk of terror-linked sleeper cells operating within American borders. This comes on the heels of significant military actions targeting Iran’s nuclear capabilities, ordered by President Donald Trump.
Shortly after Trump’s statement on U.S. military operations against Iranian sites, the Department of Homeland Security issued a memo warning of a heightened threat landscape in the United States.
The National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin did not specify any direct threats, yet Iranian officials have openly hinted at the possibility of retaliatory actions.
With Iran’s nuclear program severely disrupted and its infrastructure targeted, former FBI officials are expressing concerns that Iran and its affiliates could revert to traditional methods of retaliation — acts of terrorism. They assert that the ongoing border crisis under the Biden administration worsens the risk of inactive terror cells activating in the U.S. to launch attacks against American citizens.
The bulletin emphasizes that the chances of violent extremists within the U.S. mobilizing in response to calls for violence from Iranian leadership are significant. This potential escalation is particularly troubling during times of increased international tension.
The Department of Homeland Security stressed the importance of keeping citizens safe and informed, especially when facing external conflicts. It cites the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, suggesting these could translate into domestic threats, including cyberattacks, violent acts, and hate crimes.
Since 2020, U.S. law enforcement has successfully disrupted multiple Iranian-backed plots. The Iranian regime has also attempted to target critics, though these efforts have largely been unsuccessful.
Iran’s government has reiterated threats of retaliation against the U.S., particularly as Israeli airstrikes have intensified targeting of Iranian military interests. The situation escalated on June 13, aligning with the U.S.’s increased military involvement.
President Trump previously warned Iran against retaliating and urged its leaders to consider a peace agreement with Israel. Following the military strikes, Trump reaffirmed his intention to target additional sites in Iran should peace not be achieved swiftly.
