Robert Irwin is surprising fans with a fresh perspective on his public persona. The son of the legendary Steve Irwin, known as the Crocodile Hunter, has recently become the face of an Australian underwear brand, showcasing a different side of himself.
On Thursday, the 21-year-old was announced as the brand icon for Bonds, a popular Australian underwear company. Promotional materials depicted Irwin in the brand’s underwear, all while holding various reptiles, highlighting both his zookeeper background and his commitment to wildlife conservation.
The official social media account for Bonds stated, ‘Say g’day to our new brand icon, Robert Irwin, like you’ve never seen him before.’ Fans and followers have begun to express their mixed reactions, as many remember Robert as a child alongside his famous father.
The launch of the campaign caught many by surprise. One Instagram user exclaimed, ‘Wait what… when did he.. how did he.. huh?’ Another observer queried, ‘What in the Irwin is going on here?’ Others expressed admiration for his transformation, with comments such as, ‘Not the collab I was expecting – he looks SO good.’
Humor did not escape the reactions either, with one follower joking, ‘Is this still April Fools?’ It is clear that the juxtaposition of Robert’s former image as a child and his current modeling campaign has left many fans in awe.
Steve Irwin’s legacy continues to loom large as his son forges his own path in the limelight. The world lost Steve Irwin in 2006 after a tragic encounter with a stingray while filming a documentary. At the time, Robert was merely two years old, and his sister Bindi was eight.
In the years since, Robert has blossomed into adulthood, taking on roles that honor his father’s teachings. He maintains a position at Australia Zoo, where he continues to promote wildlife conservation.
Reflecting on this latest opportunity with Bonds, Robert shared with People magazine that the decision to model was almost instantaneous. ‘It was a pretty immediate yes,’ he revealed, adding that the idea excited him greatly. ‘Because Bonds in Australia is an absolute icon.’ He also noted, ‘I wish I could say I was very suave and cool about the whole thing, but I was like, ‘Yes! Let’s do it!”
As he enters this new chapter in life, Robert is keen to capitalize on exciting experiences that come his way. ‘I’m at this point in my life where I’m trying to do as many different and random exciting things,’ he explained.
Robert sees the underwear campaign as an innovative way to spread a message about wildlife conservation. By embracing a platform that allows him to reach a broader audience, he feels he can continue the vital legacy set forth by his father.
‘We are all trying to continue an important legacy that my dad started,’ Robert stated. He added, ‘Sometimes that comes in the form of modeling Bonds! It seems so out of the ordinary for what I would do, but I get to be with Aussie Wildlife. I get to approach a new audience, a new platform, and get my wildlife conservation message out there to more people.’
In a poignant note, Robert celebrated his 21st birthday in November, using this significant occasion to honor the memory of his father. He reflected on the bittersweet nature of milestone celebrations when someone dear is missing.
On social media, Robert shared, ‘Today I turn 21. I was looking through the archives a few days ago and I found these pictures of my dad on his 21st.’ He continued, ‘It can be hard to celebrate the milestones when there’s someone missing, but I will carry his memory and passion with me in this new chapter of life. I am one lucky guy to be surrounded by my amazing family today. Time to celebrate!’
Robert Irwin’s foray into the world of fashion modeling marks a significant evolution in his public identity. As he navigates a career filled with exciting challenges, he remains committed to the values instilled in him by his father. His recent work with Bonds not only showcases his adaptability but also his passion for conservation. In this new chapter, he aims to connect with fans in a way that honors his family’s legacy while forging his own unique path.
