Russian Man Found Guilty of Assault After Barron Trump Alerts London Police

A Russian man received a conviction in London for assaulting his girlfriend last year, an incident that drew significant attention after Barron Trump, the son of former President Donald Trump, reported the attack to authorities from the United States.

Matvei Rumiantsev, 22 years old, faced conviction for assault following his admission of jealousy regarding his girlfriend’s friendship with Barron Trump, who is 19. During a late-night FaceTime call, Barron Trump encountered a startling scene when the call was answered by a shirtless man.

“That view lasted maybe one second and I was racing with adrenaline,” Barron Trump recalled. “The camera was then flipped to the victim getting hit while crying, stating something in Russian.”

Immediate Police Response

The alarming call ended shortly after, prompting Barron Trump to reach out to the London police urgently. As he communicated with a dispatcher, Trump emphasized the urgency of the situation.

“I don’t think these details matter, she’s getting beat up,” he insisted during the call. When the dispatcher pushed for additional details, the response was firm: “If you want to help the person, you’ll answer my questions clearly and precisely.”

Police quickly responded to the address provided, arriving on January 18, 2025, where they arrested Rumiantsev, who worked as a receptionist in London.

Trial Proceedings and Verdict

At the Snaresbrook Crown Court trial, Rumiantsev faced serious charges, yet he was acquitted of rape and choking charges associated with the night of the incident involving Barron Trump. However, the jury did convict him of assault and perverting the course of justice.

The evidence presented in court included a letter allegedly sent by Rumiantsev from jail, attempting to pressure the victim into retracting her claims. This letter played a crucial role in the jury’s decision.

Emotions and Implications in Court

During his testimony, Rumiantsev expressed conflicting emotions, stating he felt jealous of Barron Trump but also sympathy towards him, suggesting that his girlfriend may have misled Trump regarding her relationship status. Rumiantsev’s defense attorney, Sasha Wass, argued that Barron Trump could not have witnessed the complete incident in such a brief video call.

Justice Bennathan, presiding over the case, cautioned the jurors regarding Barron Trump’s testimony, noting his absence from the stand, which limited the ability to cross-examine him. Trump’s statements were submitted through recorded messages and written communication.

The judge pointed out, “He could have been asked whether he actually saw the assault or whether he jumped to that conclusion based on her screams.”

Sentencing and Future Implications

Scheduled for sentencing on March 27, Rumiantsev faces potential consequences for his actions that not only impacted his life but also highlighted the role of technology in intervening during emergencies. Barron Trump’s decisive action to contact authorities underlines the influence that individuals can have when witnessing violence, even from afar.

The case has attracted media attention, and its implications extend beyond the personal realm, stirring discussions on men’s violence against women and the responsibilities of bystanders in violent situations.
