This year’s tradition involved teams across minor league baseball rebranding themselves for a limited time. Other franchises have taken part in this custom with unique identities, such as the Somerset Patriots who temporarily became the Jersey Diners and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs who assumed the moniker of Lehigh Valley Tomato Pie.
The River Cats intended to celebrate their region’s history during the California Gold Rush when they proposed the Gold Diggers premise. Sacramento’s identity as a gold rush hub in the 1840s contributed greatly to its growth, ultimately leading to its incorporation into California in 1850.
In a press release, the team expressed, “Inspired by the regional history of the California Gold Rush, this new identity offers a connection to the significant impact of this era when Sacramento grew as the closest major city to the gold fields.” Nonetheless, the execution of this idea fell flat with the public.
