FIRST ON FOX – Robin Bernstein, the former U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, who served from 2018 to 2021, has issued a warning for spring break travelers following the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old college student from the University of Pittsburgh. She was last seen near the RIU Republica Resort in Punta Cana on March 6.
Konanki, originally from Loudoun County, Virginia, vanished during the early hours of March 6 while she was walking along a beach with five friends. Despite extensive search efforts, authorities have yet to locate her.
Bernstein emphasized that while the Dominican Republic remains a generally safe destination, tourists frequently engage in behaviors that they would not consider at home. She stated, “People, when they go on spring break or vacation, sometimes make decisions that aren’t safe. We’ve always advised people to stay in groups and have a plan in place.”
Furthermore, she advised against solitary beach walks, stating such actions could lead to dangerous situations anywhere, including places like Miami Beach or even Chicago.
The search for Konanki has involved multiple agencies, including the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations, according to a statement from the Dominican Republic prosecutor’s office. Bernstein, speaking to Fox News Digital, expressed her confidence in Dominican law enforcement’s abilities, calling them “great” and indicating that they would collaborate efficiently with U.S. authorities.
Bernstein remarked on the unfortunate timing of the report regarding Konanki’s disappearance, noting that “no one notified anyone until much later in the day, which hindered the search efforts.”
Surveillance footage captured Konanki’s last recorded moments shortly after 4 a.m. on March 6 as she left a hotel bar, seen walking closely with a young man. The staff at the RIU Republica Resort reacted promptly upon being informed of her disappearance, fulfilling their responsibilities to alert the proper authorities.
In a statement, RIU Resorts & Hotels confirmed their thorough cooperation with law enforcement in the case, noting, “The last image of her was at 04:17 AM when she was seen leaving a hotel bar with friends towards the beach.” However, her friends did not report her missing until 12 hours later, at approximately 4 p.m. that same day.
Bernstein highlighted the critical nature of rapidly reporting missing persons, stating, “The sooner authorities are notified, the better it is for the missing individual. I’m relieved to hear that the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has become involved because additional expertise can aid in swift action. Time is of the essence in cases like this—the longer it takes, the colder it becomes.”
Authorities have clarified that this case remains a missing person investigation, devoid of any current suspects.
Bernstein extended her heartfelt condolences to Konanki’s family during this difficult time. She reflected on the tragedy stemming from what was supposed to be a joyful vacation, noting, “This has turned into a parent’s worst nightmare. As a mother of three daughters, my heart stops every time I hear news like this. I sincerely hope she will be found soon.”
In light of this ongoing situation, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office remains involved but is not the lead agency. They are coordinating with federal law enforcement and are sending detectives to assist in the Dominican Republic.
Officials are urging anyone with information regarding Sudiksha Konanki’s whereabouts to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-1021. Individuals can also reach out anonymously to Loudoun Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919.
As the search continues, the community and family hold onto hope for Konanki’s safe return, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and safety, particularly during travel seasons like spring break.
