In response to a growing demand for healthier food options, Sam’s Club is making significant strides towards its goal of removing harmful ingredients from its food and beverages. This initiative aligns with the recommendations of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been advocating for the elimination of synthetic dyes in American food products.
The retailer’s ambitious “Made Without” initiative has achieved 96% of its target, which focuses on eliminating artificial colors, additives, and high-fructose corn syrup from its private label, Member’s Mark. The plan aims to remove 40 specific ingredients by the year 2025, marking a notable shift towards cleaner nutrition.
Sam’s Club’s commitment to enhancing food quality is evident in its press release, which highlights the initiative’s alignment with member preferences. The company stated, “This accomplishment underscores how Sam’s Club prioritizes what matters most to members, by aligning its offerings with evolving dietary preferences and developing products made with simpler, more recognizable ingredients.”
Furthermore, Sam’s Club emphasized the broader purpose behind its Member’s Mark brand: to provide customers with access to high-quality products free from certain detrimental ingredients.
Recently, Sam’s Club launched a new private brand called “bettergoods.” This line includes a range of plant-based and “made without” products, offering consumers more options for healthy eating choices. A spokesperson for the brand stated, “We currently offer thousands of items across our private brands that are free from artificial flavors and colors.”
The drive towards healthier food options reflects current consumer trends. According to a survey conducted among members, 72% are actively seeking minimally processed foods. Additionally, 90% of members expressed a desire to either maintain or aspire to a healthier lifestyle. These insights illustrate a clear consumer shift towards nutrition-focused products.
A recent report from the Make America Healthy Again Commission, chaired by Secretary Kennedy, highlighted alarming statistics regarding childhood nutrition. The report found that nearly 70% of calories consumed by American children stem from ultraprocessed foods. These items are often high in added sugars and chemical additives while lacking essential nutrients such as fruits and vegetables.
The findings pose serious health implications, linking ultraprocessed foods to chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and certain cancers.
Julie Barber, chief merchant at Sam’s Club, commented on the brand’s commitment to quality, stating, “What truly differentiates us are the ingredients we consciously leave out. Our ‘Made Without’ commitment underscores our aspiration to be members’ go-to destination for quality at a disruptive value.” This focus on ingredient integrity supports the brand’s goal to foster a healthier community.
In addition to food products, the
