The San Diego Padres not only experienced a disappointing loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, but they may have lost their All-Star relief pitcher Jason Adam for the remainder of the season.
The dramatic incident unfolded during the seventh inning of the team’s tight 4-3 defeat at Petco Park. At that moment, the game was tied at 3-3, with one out and a runner on first base when Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson hit a soft grounder back toward the pitcher’s mound.
Adam, attempting to field the ball, suddenly crumpled in pain. While Padres shortstop Jose Iglesias managed to collect the ball, he could not make a play as Henderson reached first safely.
At that point, Adam signaled to the dugout, indicating he needed assistance. Moments later, his teammates watched in concern as he was lifted onto a cart and taken off the field, receiving a warm ovation from the crowd.
After the game, Adam spoke with reporters while using crutches and wearing a brace on his left leg. He described the moment he felt the injury. “I felt the pop right away, it felt like my quad rolled up, so I knew it wasn’t good. Initially, it was painful, but then you start to think, ‘Did we get the out?’”
In his explanation, Adam detailed the incident further. “I went to plant to grab the ball because it was a chopper to my right, and that’s when I felt the pop, and I just fell. It was unsettling to realize what had happened to my leg.”
The veteran reliever anticipates a lengthy recovery process. He indicated that despite needing confirmation through an MRI, the prognosis is likely a six to nine-month recovery period, implying that his season is effectively over.
Adam expressed deep disappointment about missing a potential World Series run. “I think that’s the hardest part. Recovery is one thing, but knowing this group’s potential and the mental toughness they possess makes it challenging to step back. I want to be part of it, but I can still support the team in other ways,” he elaborated.
Throughout the season, Adam has been a vital asset to the Padres. His impressive statistics include a 1.93 ERA and 70 strikeouts across 65 1/3 innings pitched over 66 games. His performance significantly contributed to the Padres’ bullpen ERA of 3.11, which ranks as the best in Major League Baseball.
Padres manager Mike Shildt praised Adam’s contributions, calling him “an absolute workhorse” and emphasizing how much he will be missed. Shildt highlighted the team’s strong bond, saying, “We’ve got a great clubhouse with great guys. I admire Jason for his solid character and respect within the team. We will have to adjust with his absence, but his impact won’t simply disappear.”
As the Padres faced this setback, they also grappled with recent performance issues, suffering two consecutive losses. Currently, they trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 2 1/2 games in the National League West standings, while sitting just two games ahead of the New York Mets for the second NL wild-card spot.
The Padres entered Tuesday’s game looking to break the losing streak against the Orioles in the second matchup of their three-game series, with the first pitch scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET.
The medical staff will play a crucial role in determining Jason Adam’s recovery plan and the overall strategy for the team in the upcoming games. As they navigate through this difficult phase, the Padres will rely on their resilience and depth to maintain competitiveness in a tight playoff race.
