A 79-year-old man from Florida was discovered deceased on Friday morning after he went missing from the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, as confirmed by the state Fish and Game Department.
Authorities reported that search teams located the body of William Davis following a challenging three-day operation. This effort involved aerial assistance from helicopters, the use of drones, and the dedication of numerous ground personnel at one of New England’s most popular summer tourist sites.
In a statement posted on social media, the Fish and Game Department expressed its condolences, stating, “This is a tragic end to a strenuous search mission. We would like to thank the volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly to help bring Davis back to his family.”
Davis, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, initially reached the summit via the Mount Washington Cog Railway on Wednesday afternoon. According to the Fish and Game Department, he was last seen near the visitor center at approximately 3:20 p.m., shortly after taking a photo with his wife. Shortly thereafter, he separated from her to wander towards the trail on his own.
Despite making brief contact with a state park employee via cellphone, Davis could not convey his exact location and reported being off the beaten path. Unfortunately, his phone died during this conversation, prompting search teams to be alerted shortly after 6 p.m. that evening.
Initially, search crews concentrated their efforts on the western side of the summit. Fish and Game officers, park staff, and volunteers from the Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue launched a comprehensive search operation using drones and ground teams, which extended into early Thursday morning.
Poor visibility due to fog and windy conditions hampered their progress, and no signs of Davis were found during this period.
As dawn broke on Friday, the focus of the search shifted to the eastern and southern slopes of the mountain, where the weather had deteriorated significantly. Rain, clouds, and high winds moved in, contributing to challenging conditions. Temperatures hovered around the low 40s, with wind chill readings approaching freezing.
Mount Washington is notorious for its unpredictable weather patterns, rocky terrain, and limited visibility, even during the summer months. The wind chill can drop unexpectedly, heightening the risks for hikers.
While the summit is accessible by car and train, those unfamiliar with mountain hiking can find the trails just beyond the visitor center perilous. Each year, numerous rescues take place on the mountain due to its treacherous conditions.
At approximately 11 a.m. on Friday, volunteers from AVSAR located Davis’s body about 400 feet off the Lion Head Trail, situated between the Alpine Garden and Tuckerman Ravine Trails. Rescue officials speculated that he may have experienced a serious fall, resulting in his fatal injuries.
During the operation, a Black Hawk helicopter crew from the New Hampshire Army National Guard, conducting a nearby training mission, was able to assist with recovery efforts during a brief lull in the inclement weather.
As of now, an autopsy is pending at the state medical examiner’s office to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are yet to ascertain how Davis ended up in the remote area where he was found.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has not responded to requests for additional comments regarding the incident.
This heartbreaking event highlights not only the beauty of Mount Washington but also the inherent dangers that come with exploring such unpredictable landscapes. Those planning to hike must always prioritize safety, be aware of their surroundings, and ensure they have adequate gear and support for any unforeseen circumstances they may face.
