Sebastian Maniscalco Emphasizes Discipline in Parenting and Comedy

Although his career revolves around laughter, Sebastian Maniscalco takes parenting very seriously. In a candid discussion with Fox News Digital, the comedian and actor reflected on his family values, his latest acting role, and his evolving perspective on social media.

Currently starring in Apple Podcast’s scripted docudrama ‘Easy Money: The Charles Ponzi Story’, Maniscalco delved into the challenges of modern parenting and the importance of discipline. He shares two children, Serafina Simone, aged 8, and Caruso Jack, aged 5, with his wife, Lana Gomez. He firmly believes that effective parenting requires a dose of strictness.

The Need for Structure in Parenting

Maniscalco stated, “Kids need structure; they need discipline.” He draws from his own upbringing in a middle-class family that instilled hard work and responsibility in him. He reminisced about chores such as cutting the lawn and cleaning the house every Saturday, suggesting that these routines built character. He worries that today’s children may lack the same level of struggle, which can be critical for their development.

He explained, “They’re growing up with really no struggle. We’re not struggling for food or shelter, but it is vital to impart core values and a strong work ethic. Parenting is a full-time job; there are no days off.”

His commitment to teaching manners is evident as he insists on his children using words like ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you.’ Maniscalco shared, “If they don’t say those words, I’m right there reminding them. It becomes part of their standard behavior.”

Being Firm in Modern Parenting

Maniscalco reflected on contemporary parenting styles he observes. He noted how, during a party at his home, a child resisted his command to leave the pool. He cited this as an example of the need for firmness. “Parenting requires boundaries. Kids must understand that rules exist for a reason,” he argued.

On his current stand-up tour dubbed ‘It Ain’t Right’, he often incorporates humorous situations from his fatherhood journey. Maniscalco remarked, “I joke about it in my routines. You need to be assertive to clarify when you are serious and when you are joking with kids. The tone and volume of your voice make all the difference.”

His wife, he describes as a nurturing partner who balances his more disciplinarian approach. This dynamic provides a harmonious parenting environment. “It’s great to have that yin and yang in the household,” he stated.

Maniscalco found that his role as a father is one of the most rewarding experiences in his life. He described the fulfillment that comes from molding his children’s character and providing them with the necessary tools to navigate life. However, he candidly acknowledged the labor intensive nature of parenting.

Challenges in Modern Comedy

In addition to his family life, Maniscalco maintains a keen interest in the world of comedy. As he has progressed in his career, he has become cautious about sharing content on social media. He expressed concern over how audiences might misinterpret his posts. “What I perceive as funny online can sometimes be misjudged. Once something is posted, it cannot be taken back,” he explained.

While performing stand-up, he emphasizes that the audience experiences a performance distinct from his social media presence. He clarified, “When I stand on stage, I often talk about stories that might not have happened to me directly. Social media brings a different set of challenges, where people can react in unexpected ways to your humor.”

Maniscalco remarked on the sensitivity of audiences today, stating, “It’s unfortunate that comedians must navigate the potential fallout from innocent jokes. So while I still aim to make people laugh, I have to be mindful about how I present my humor online.”

A Unique Role in ‘Easy Money: The Charles Ponzi Story’

In his latest project for Apple Podcasts, Maniscalco voices the infamous swindler Charles Ponzi in an eight-part series detailing his rise and fall. The story encompasses Ponzi’s fraudulent schemes that deceived countless investors, equating to massive financial loss in today’s terms.

Reflecting on Ponzi schemes, Maniscalco admitted he has always been fascinated by them. During the early 2000s, he nearly invested in one, only to step back at the last minute. He shared, “I saw a lot of money moving around and was tempted to get involved. Fortunately, I didn’t. But the allure of such schemes is fascinating.”

As he recorded this unique podcast, he faced the challenge of adapting to a format he had never tried before. Confined to a sound booth without fellow actors, he relied on his imagination to bring his character to life. He commented, “Recording felt unusual. I wondered how well I was doing. Yet, listening back revealed the level of production, including sound effects and thorough journalism behind the scripts. It genuinely creates an immersive listening experience over eight episodes, and I’m proud to contribute to it.”

“I would describe the series as an audio motion picture,” he continued. “Listeners are invited to visualize scenes in their mind, akin to watching a movie. It truly brings the story to life in a way that resonates with the audience.”
