Selma Blair Shares Inspiring Health Update on Multiple Sclerosis Journey
Actress Selma Blair recently provided an uplifting health update regarding her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis. The 52-year-old star, known for her roles in films such as Legally Blonde, initially announced her diagnosis in 2018. On Thursday, she expressed that she is now “truly relapse-free” from the symptoms associated with this chronic autoimmune disease.
In an exclusive conversation with People magazine, Blair shared her joy, stating, “I am doing amazingly well. I’ve been feeling great for about a year. But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely … I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy, getting out and going out isn’t so scary.”
With her improved health, Blair is redirecting her focus toward future aspirations and career rejuvenation. “It’s funny. I haven’t spent enough time having dreams. And now it’s like, ‘What are my dreams?'” she reflected.
The journey since her diagnosis has been far from easy. Blair described a period marked by constant fatigue, explaining, “I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day. And now it’s like, ‘Wait, I realize I don’t know what my goals are.'” This newfound clarity offers her the chance to reimagine her ambitions.
Revitalized Career Plans Take Center Stage
As her health continues to improve, Blair’s career aspirations have risen to the forefront. She conveyed her desire to return to acting, noting that she “would love” to take on new roles. Several projects are already in the pipeline, marking her return to the screen.
According to recent reports, Blair plans to star in three upcoming films. These projects include a poignant drama centered on the Israel-Hamas conflict entitled Stay Forte, the supernatural thriller Silent, and a drama about twin brothers titled There There, directed by real-life siblings Michael and Mark Polish.
Exploring Creative Avenues Beyond Acting
In addition to her acting career, Blair has ambitious writing plans. Following the success of her memoir, Mean Baby: A Memoir of Growing Up, she mentioned intentions to create a young adult book within the fantasy genre. This expansion into writing showcases her versatility and desire to inspire others through various mediums.
Since her diagnosis, she has been candid about the challenges of living with MS. Blair has utilized her platform to raise awareness and support for those grappling with similar health issues. Her advocacy efforts aim to empower individuals facing chronic illnesses, particularly exploring what it means to cultivate a new sense of vibrancy in life.
In her recent discussion with People, Blair emphasized the importance of advocacy, stating, “I will continue advocating for people with chronic illness and getting better and what that looks like when you haven’t made your wishes. How do we give ourselves a new life force?” Her commitment to raising awareness brings hope to many navigating health challenges.
A Milestone Diagnosis Leads to Remission
In August 2018, Blair publicly revealed her MS diagnosis via an emotional Instagram post. At that time, she described her experience with the disease, saying, “I have #multiplesclerosis. I am in an exacerbation. By the grace of the lord, and will power and the understanding producers at Netflix, I have a job. A wonderful job. I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken GPS.” Her resilience and humor amidst hardship were evident, as she concluded the post with an optimistic message: “But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best.”
Blair has experienced significant progress in her health, being in remission from MS since 2021 after undergoing a stem cell transplant. This pivotal treatment has played a crucial role in her recovery, allowing her to reconnect with her passions.
