EXCLUSIVE REPORT: Senators Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, are calling on Attorney General Pam Bondi to appoint a special counsel to delve into newly released information concerning the Obama administration’s intelligence assessments about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The request for a special counsel, which Fox News Digital has learned will be announced on Thursday morning, follows the recent formation of a “strike force” by the Department of Justice. This task force aims to investigate evidence that was recently declassified by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard earlier this week.
Both Graham and Cornyn hold significant roles on the Senate Judiciary Committee. While they did not specifically mention the DOJ’s strike force, they emphasized that special counsels operate independently of the attorney general, thus ensuring an unbiased investigation.
In their joint statement, Graham and Cornyn asserted, “As we have supported in the past, appointing an independent special counsel would provide a tremendous service to the country in this case.” Their endorsement underscores the importance of transparency in addressing politically sensitive issues.
Gabbard’s declassified intelligence has brought forth new insights into the Obama administration’s conclusion that Russia actively sought to aid Donald Trump’s candidacy during the 2016 election. Gabbard stated during a press briefing that Obama and his intelligence team advanced a “contrived narrative” suggesting Russian interference was meant to benefit Trump, calling the assertion misleading.
Senator Graham, who previously chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee, played a pivotal role in the Senate’s investigation of the FBI’s inquiry into alleged collusion between Trump and Russia. In 2020, he published a collection of documents questioning the justification behind the FBI’s investigation into Trump, suggesting a lack of solid evidence.
Furthermore, Graham and Cornyn stated, “With each new piece of information, it becomes increasingly clear that the entire Russia collusion narrative was fabricated by the Obama administration to undermine the democratic process and the will of the American people.” Their remarks indicate a strong belief that these investigations have a profound impact on public perception of past events.
These statements come amidst former President Trump’s accusations that Barack Obama committed “treason” and as the DOJ has opened criminal inquiries into former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey. The atmosphere of scrutiny reflects the broader political tensions surrounding the investigations.
Critics of Gabbard’s assertions point out that past congressional reviews, some led by Republican officials, contradict her claims regarding Russian interference. Meanwhile, Obama himself has responded to the increasing headlines that suggest his administration aimed to hinder Trump’s electoral chances.
In an official statement, Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush expressed that out of respect for the presidency, the former president’s office does not typically respond to misinformation propagated from the current administration. However, he noted that the recent allegations were serious enough to warrant a response, labeling them as both bizarre and a weak ploy for distraction.
In the wake of these developments, Fox News has sought comments from the DOJ regarding the request for a special counsel. This request comes at a crucial time as the political landscape is heavily influenced by ongoing investigations and disclosures.
