On Tuesday, chaos enveloped Serbia’s parliament as opposition lawmakers ignited smoke grenades and released tear gas in a dramatic protest against the government. This unrest highlights the increasing political tensions in the Balkan country, located at the crossroads of Southeast and Central Europe.
At least three lawmakers sustained injuries, with one reportedly in critical condition after suffering a stroke. This incident adds fuel to the ongoing unrest that has been simmering for weeks. Video footage from the session captured a turbulent scene where clashes erupted between opposing lawmakers, followed by the hurling of flares and smoke bombs. Reports indicated that outside the parliament, hundreds of opposition supporters rallied, intensifying the atmosphere of dissent.
The upheaval in the Serbian parliament can be traced back to a tragic incident last November when a canopy at a railway station collapsed. During the chaotic legislative session, lawmakers were slated to vote on a law aimed at increasing funding for university education, a significant demand from student protesters. However, opposition parties voiced complaints that the ruling majority was attempting to advance multiple decisions in a manner they deemed illegal. They demanded that Parliament prioritize the confirmation of Vucevic’s resignation before addressing any other matters.
Following the assertion of the ruling coalition’s agenda led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), dissenting lawmakers charged toward the parliamentary speaker, resulting in a physical altercation with security personnel. Amid these events, smoke grenades and tear gas were deployed, filling the chamber with a thick plume of smoke that ranged in color from black to pink.
Throughout the session, while ruling coalition politicians continued their debates, opposition lawmakers expressed their dissent through whistling and horn-blowing. Signs demanding a
