The local sheriff’s department for a missing American college student has identified a person of interest in the case of Sudiksha Konanki. This announcement came five days after her disappearance while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.
According to Thomas Julia, a spokesperson for the Loudoun County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office, Joshua Riibe, 24, has been deemed a “person of interest” related to the University of Pittsburgh student’s disappearance during her spring break. Julia confirmed the information in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.
While Riibe has undergone extensive questioning, Julia emphasized that this remains a missing person investigation, distinct from any criminal allegations. Riibe has not faced charges in connection to this case.
“Sheriff [Michael] Chapman is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation that utilizes all available resources and techniques,” Julia stated. “We are collaborating closely with the FBI, who are coordinating with the Dominican National Police on this matter.”
Authorities reported that Konanki, a resident of Loudoun County, Virginia, traveled to the Riu República Hotel in Punta Cana with five classmates from the University of Pittsburgh during their spring break, which commenced on March 2 and concluded on Sunday.
Last seen on surveillance footage, Konanki appeared with her group entering the beach area of the five-star resort shortly after 4:15 a.m. on Thursday, as previously noted by the Dominican National Police.
Footage obtained by Noticias SIN depicted Konanki appearing to cling to a man as they approached the beach, marking the last known sighting of the Virginia native before her mysterious disappearance.
The circumstances surrounding Konanki’s disappearance have ignited mounting speculation, prompting investigations from law enforcement in both the Dominican Republic and the United States. Currently, no suspects have been identified amidst this ongoing investigation.
On Tuesday, the Dominican National Police announced efforts to re-interview individuals who were close to Konanki during the moments leading up to her disappearance. This initiative aims to gather information from those in her vicinity at that critical time.
The investigation strategy also targets hotel employees who interacted with Konanki and her travel companions. Authorities are seeking to collect details that can help reconstruct her movements and interactions prior to her disappearance.
In response to circulating allegations suggesting that Konanki may have drowned, a spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office stated that to date, authorities have received no evidence supporting such claims.
A multi-agency investigation remains active, involving the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican National Police, and the Dominican Prosecutors Office. The FBI is also providing assistance with the inquiry.
As of now, the FBI has opted not to disclose any further details related to the investigation into Konanki’s disappearance. Efforts to reach Joshua Riibe for comment have been ongoing.
In light of these concerns, prominent figures, including Beth Holloway—the mother of a missing college student—have called for a comprehensive safety plan for students traveling abroad. Holloway underscores the need for proactive strategies to prevent similar tragedies, highlighting that educational institutions must prioritize student safety during travel.
While the search for Sudiksha Konanki continues, the commitment from law enforcement agencies remains unwavering. The community, both locally and nationally, watches closely as efforts unfold to locate her and ensure her safe return.
The search for Konanki has united various communities, sparking rallies and social media campaigns advocating for her return. These efforts aim to raise awareness about her situation and the broader implications regarding student safety during international travel.
As investigators pursue all leads, both the public and authorities hope for a resolution. The story remains a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those studying away from home.
Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. With each passing day, the determination to find Sudiksha Konanki and uncover the truth behind her disappearance only intensifies.
