Shifting Plastic Surgery Trends: Patients Embrace Natural Aesthetics and Size Reduction

Shifting Plastic Surgery Trends: Patients Embrace Natural Aesthetics and Size Reduction

Recently, the notion that bigger is always better in cosmetic surgery has begun to wane. Gone are the days of the highly sought-after “Kardashian” aesthetic, characterized by exaggerated features such as Brazilian butt lifts and large breast augmentations.

An Emergence of Natural Preferences

Plastic surgeons across the country report a noticeable trend: an increasing number of patients are opting to downsize their appearances. Many are choosing to undergo breast reductions and dissolve fillers in favor of a more understated and natural look.

Dr. Stafford Broumand, a board-certified plastic surgeon at 740 Park Plastic Surgery in New York, emphasizes this shift. According to him, clients are now seeking “more natural results versus overdone.” They express preferences for smaller breast implants and fat grafting aimed at enhancing contours rather than merely enlarging them.

“Patients are looking for symmetry in their body and face, as well as soft, full lips to achieve a youthful appearance,” Dr. Broumand stated.

The Role of the Younger Demographic

Interestingly, Dr. Broumand mentions an uptick in younger patients inquiring about facelifts, highlighting a desire for more natural contours. The emphasis is on eliminating excess skin, indicating a shift towards age-appropriate cosmetic procedures.

Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, a Beverly Hills surgeon and co-founder of the online concierge service Persana, notes another trend. He observes that individuals are increasingly opting to dissolve previously injected fillers, particularly when there has been overuse or incorrect placement.

Understanding Duration and Residual Effects of Fillers

Unlike Botox, which typically lasts three to four months, fillers can last for years. This has led clients to reconsider their approach to fillers, shifting towards a more conservative aesthetic. “We still see a demand for fillers, but many patients now prefer fat grafting and surgical lip lifts for achieving their aesthetic goals,” Dr. Azizzadeh shared.

Athletic Aesthetics in Demand

Dr. Lyle Leipziger, chief of plastic surgery at North Shore University Hospital, echoes the sentiment. At his practice, patients are increasingly seeking athletic and physically fit appearances. He notes a significant rise in requests for breast reductions and lifts, often paired with smaller implants.

As the trend evolves, more individuals are turning to facelifts and body contouring procedures.

The Impact of Weight Loss Medications

The surge in popularity of weight-loss medications, like Ozempic, has notably influenced plastic surgery preferences. According to Dr. Azizzadeh, significant weight loss can lead to changes in facial volume and skin laxity. Consequently, more patients are requesting facelifts, neck lifts, and fat grafting.

Dr. Broumand agrees, noting that with the advent of these medications, the focus has shifted. “Instead of merely removing fat and contouring, we often need to add volume and remove extra skin,” he explained.

Likewise, Dr. Leipziger observes that quick weight loss often leaves individuals wanting to remedy sagging skin and aging appearances. This results in increased requests for reconstructive procedures following rapid weight loss.

Awareness and Education on Cosmetic Procedures

The rise of social media has made potential complications of plastic surgery, such as “pillow face,” more visible, emphasizing the importance of informed decisions. Many patients are learning the value of choosing knowledgeable, board-certified plastic surgeons, which can dramatically affect outcomes.

Dr. Broumand stresses the relevance of making sound choices for individual patient needs over following fleeting trends. He cautions against pursuing a specific body trend without consideration for long-term satisfaction.

Prioritizing Natural Results

Azizzadeh reiterates the importance of selecting the right surgeon, as varying outcomes are common even with the same procedure. The emphasis across all procedures continues to lean towards natural-looking enhancements, steering away from overly dramatic appearances.

As celebrity influences push for clean and understated visuals, it becomes clear that while more individuals are undergoing plastic surgery, the desire for subtle and effortless results increasingly defines current trends.
