This information surfaced during a police briefing on Monday, where officials disclosed that Boelter, aged 57, had sought out the residences of two lawmakers before carrying out his violent attacks.
The Horrific Events of the Night
According to authorities, Boelter dressed as a police officer, complete with a tactical vest, advanced body armor, and a realistic mask, before committing these crimes. The fatal shootings occurred in the early hours of a Saturday morning. First, he shot Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in Champlin around 2 a.m. Shortly thereafter, at approximately 3:30 a.m., he targeted House Speaker Hortman and her husband, Mark, in Brooklyn Park.
The suspect’s vehicle, equipped with flashing emergency lights, carried a license plate labeled ‘police,’ adding a layer of deception to his actions.
A Close Call for Another Lawmaker
Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson revealed during the briefing that Boelter’s attempts to enter two additional homes occurred between the shootings. Surveillance footage captured significant moments during this timeline.
Thompson stated, “Video surveillance showed that Boelter rang the doorbell at the state representative’s house at approximately 2:24 a.m. on Friday night.” Although he did not identify the lawmaker, he confirmed that she was on vacation, allowing Boelter to leave without incident.

According to reports, the officer engaged with Boelter, who displayed no verbal response before eventually departing the area. State Senator Ann Rest later confirmed that Boelter had approached her residence.
Thompson elaborated on the swift response by law enforcement, stating, “After learning of the shooting of Senator Hoffman, New Hope police dispatched an officer to conduct a wellness check on the state senator who resided there.” The officer on the scene noticed Boelter’s SUV parked nearby with its lights activated. Despite Boelter’s presence, he remained unresponsive and simply stared ahead.
Lawmakers Express Gratitude
Rest expressed her gratitude towards the police force for their prompt actions, crediting them for her safety. She said, “Their quick action saved my life. I am also thankful for the work of state and local law enforcement to apprehend the suspect before he could take any more lives.”
As tragic as the situation is, Rest expressed her sorrow for the victims. “While I am thankful the suspect has been apprehended, I grieve for the loss of Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and I am praying for the recovery of John and Yvette Hoffman,” she said.
