The Major League Baseball season has officially commenced, and it kicked off in style with an exciting game. The Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed over the Chicago Cubs with a score of 4-1 in the Tokyo Dome, Japan, marking a significant milestone in the league’s history.
The matchup was particularly special as it featured Yoshinobu Yamamoto starting for the Dodgers and Shota Imanaga on the mound for the Cubs. This marked the first time in MLB history that an all-Japanese starting pitching duel occurred on opening day.
Yamamoto showcased his skills effectively over five innings, striking out three batters and allowing only a single run. The lone run scored by the Cubs came in the second inning when catcher Miguel Amaya hit a two-out double, which allowed Dansby Swanson to cross the plate.
Imanaga had an impressive outing as well, pitching four hitless innings. However, he struggled with control, walking four batters and recording two strikeouts before the Cubs turned to their bullpen.
The pivotal moment of the game occurred in the fifth inning when the Dodgers secured the lead. Following Imanaga’s departure, Andy Pages walked. Shohei Ohtani then energized the team with the Dodgers’ first hit, a single down the right-field line against reliever Ben Brown.
This crucial hit set the stage for Tommy Edman, who was up next. Edman delivered with a solid line drive into left field that found a gap in front of left fielder Ian Happ, allowing Pages to score.
Although Ohtani could only advance to second base due to a quick fielding play by Happ, the Dodgers were starting to build momentum. Brown nearly escaped the inning but was foiled by an error from second baseman Jon Berti, who airmailed a throw to first base while trying to complete a double play.
That misfire allowed Ohtani to score and extended the inning for the Dodgers, who seized the opportunity. Will Smith then hit a line drive to left field that brought Hernandez home, widening the lead to 3-1.
After the fifth inning, the Dodgers’ pitching staff took control. Yamamoto, along with relief pitchers Anthony Banda, Ben Casparius, and Blake Treinen, accomplished a remarkable feat by retiring 16 consecutive batters between the third and eighth innings. Their dominance only faltered when Treinen hit Berti with a pitch in the eighth.
The ninth inning saw the Dodgers add an important insurance run. Ohtani, leading off the inning, hit a double and later scored on Hernandez’s single, bringing the final score to 4-1.
Tanner Scott made his Dodgers debut, having recently signed with the team, and he successfully recorded a save to wrap up the victory.
The Dodgers and Cubs will face off again in a second game of the Tokyo Series on Wednesday morning. Japanese rookie Roki Sasaki is set to make his MLB debut for the Dodgers, while left-hander Justin Steele takes the mound for the Cubs. This matchup promises another exciting chapter in this unique opening to the MLB season.
The remainder of MLB teams will begin their regular season on March 27, but the Cubs and Dodgers have already made history by playing in this remarkable Tokyo Series.
