A female skier sustained serious injuries from a snow leopard attack after approaching the animal for a photograph on Friday. This unsettling incident, captured on video, has raised immediate concerns over wildlife interactions.
The attack occurred around 7 p.m. in Fuyun County, located near China’s northern border with Mongolia. According to reports from Jam Press, the skier edged dangerously close to the snow leopard, coming within 10 feet before the predator struck.
Video footage reveals the skier lying motionless in the snow, with the leopard nearby after the mauling. Bystanders rushed to assist her while blood streamed from her face.
In an astonishing turn of events, reports indicated that her helmet played a crucial role in preventing more grievous injuries. This incident highlights the dangers of close encounters with wildlife, particularly large predators.
Prior to the attack, local authorities had issued warnings after several sightings of the snow leopard near a hotel the day before. This raised alarm among tourists, as wildlife officials reported that the leopard likely remained in the area due to food scarcity.
Witness reports indicate that the injured skier first spotted the leopard on her return to the hotel. In pursuit of a better photo opportunity, she moved closer to the leopard, which ultimately resulted in the animal pouncing and inflicting severe injuries to her face. A ski instructor intervened, successfully driving off the leopard by waving ski poles.
The injured skier received immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital, where she has since been reported to be in stable condition. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of tourists in the region.
Local authorities had recently warned visitors about the presence of multiple snow leopards in the vicinity just days prior to the attack. Despite the historical rarity of snow leopard attacks on humans—a consequence of their generally shy and elusive nature—officials cautioned tourists about the animals’ unpredictable behavior.
In their advisory, authorities stressed that snow leopards possess aggressive tendencies, urging people to avoid lingering near them or attempting to take photographs. The warning specifically advised visitors to move swiftly through the area and to avoid approaching the animals altogether.
