One notable incident took place last month when a California sushi restaurant chain suffered significant losses due to the actions of a serial dine-and-dasher. This individual reportedly stole around $1,000 worth of meals from various locations.

Randy Musterer, founder and CEO of Sushi Confidential, expressed the grave implications of such thefts, stating, “Every little thing has a positive or negative effect on small businesses, so this definitely has an impact.” His restaurant staff actively sought a man who had dined and dashed at two Sushi Confidential locations.

When the man unexpectedly returned to the flagship location in Campbell, workers immediately recognized him as the alleged thief. Musterer recounts, “I got a phone call from one of our managers saying, ‘Oh my gosh, the guy who has been dining and dashing in our Campbell location, he’s on the patio right now.’” The restaurant staff quickly devised a plan to prevent the theft.

As food was served, Musterer’s team handed the alleged thief his check, waiting for payment. When he excused himself to use the restroom, they knew he intended to flee. “The minute he got up, I knew something was going to go down,” Musterer shared. Shortly after, the suspect ran out the front door.

Musterer contacted the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest after a brief search. According to the Campbell Police Department, the individual now faces three counts of defrauding an innkeeper, with a court appearance scheduled for next month.

Musterer highlighted the crushing reality for business owners, noting, “No one likes to be taken advantage of. Whether it’s your money or someone else’s, you want to grab the bull by the horns and help solve the problem yourself.” Such acts of theft are not victimless crimes and can disrupt the livelihoods of local business owners and their employees.

Sam Toia, president of the Illinois Restaurant Association, voiced similar concerns. He explained that dine-and-dash incidents place additional financial burdens on restaurants already grappling with economic challenges. “Before the pandemic, the restaurant industry was an industry of nickels and dimes. Post-pandemic, it has turned into a business of pennies and nickels; these incidents create further financial strains.”

This disheartening trend continues to attract media attention, particularly as some offenders engage in repeated thefts or boast about their crimes online.

Following Musterer’s experience, another high-profile incident made headlines when a group of women dined at a Chicago restaurant and walked out without paying their substantial bill of over $200. They celebrated a birthday meal at Soul Vibez, ordering alfredo, chicken wings, and several drinks. After enjoying their meal, they left the restaurant without settling their tab, even posting a photo of their meal online with a message thanking the restaurant for the free food.

Chicago police are actively investigating the case, emphasizing that incidents of dining and dashing have surged since the pandemic. Toia believes that this uptick could force businesses to pass the losses onto paying customers, resulting in higher menu prices.

“It doesn’t just hurt the restaurant owner. It also affects team members, waitstaff, busboys, and bartenders. Customers choose restaurants not just for the food, but for the service. When staff morale suffers due to such incidents, it ultimately harms the dining experience,” Toia stated.

Toia is urging communities to unite to support smaller businesses and their employees. He calls for government intervention to help owners lacking the financial security of larger chains. “Larger chains may absorb some losses, but smaller, independent restaurants often lack the financial cushion to recover from frequent thefts. A single tough month can force an independent restaurant out of business entirely,” he emphasized.

As a small business owner himself, Musterer expressed the emotional toll of such criminal activities on his employees. He stated, “As a small business owner, you have to brace yourself for challenges. However, the most heartbreaking part is witnessing how these crimes affect your staff. These occurrences impact them deeply, as they are not accustomed to the same financial risks as business owners.”
