Speaker Mike Johnson Dismisses Elon Musk’s Call for New Spending Bill
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, has firmly rejected billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s proposal for a new budget reconciliation bill. This disagreement highlights the growing divide between Musk and Republican lawmakers in Washington.
On Wednesday, Musk urged for the creation of a spending bill that would not significantly increase the deficit or raise the debt ceiling by an astonishing five trillion dollars. His remarks came through a post on social media platform X.
Shortly thereafter, he intensified his criticism by proclaiming, “KILL the BILL,” signaling his strong opposition to the current budget legislation.
Timeline Challenges for Congressional Overhaul
In response to Musk’s demands, Speaker Johnson expressed concern about the feasibility of overhauling former President Donald Trump’s expansive agenda bill within the tight constraints of Congress’s timeline. Johnson emphasized the urgency of the current legislative process when he stated, “We don’t have time for a brand-new bill.”
His comments reflect a clear directive to focus on the existing legislation, which has been the product of extensive work. Johnson elaborated, “I want Elon and all my friends to recognize the complexity of what we’ve accomplished here. This extraordinary piece of legislation includes record savings, significant tax cuts for the American people, and numerous other benefits.”
Months of Effort on a Comprehensive Piece of Legislation
Johnson pointed out that the process to draft the bill spanned nearly fourteen months, making it impractical to start anew. He highlighted the importance of delivering a well-considered product rather than returning to the drawing board.
He cautioned those critical of the legislation not to let the pursuit of perfection interfere with achieving good outcomes. As he stated, “We’re proud of this product. The House Republicans are proud of it, and we’re happy to go out and explain that to everybody.”

Historically, Republicans have praised Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, for identifying potential spending cuts. Leavitt remarked, “The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change the president’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”
