Spencer Pratt Joins LA Mayor Race, Critiques Current Leadership for Fire Management Failures

Spencer Pratt, best known as a reality TV personality, recently announced his candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles. His decision to enter politics stems from what he perceives as significant failures by the city’s leaders in handling last year’s devastating fires. Pratt described the leadership’s response as nothing short of “criminal negligence” and feels compelled to take action.

In a recent appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Pratt explained that his political ambitions were not always present. He emphasized that his priorities were initially focused on a normal family life, devoid of political drama. However, the trauma he experienced from the fires that destroyed his home prompted a change in his mindset. Pratt stated, “I want to be back in my house with my family, going down to the local public schools and having just a normal life.”

Fire Aftermath and Leadership Accountability

Pratt believes that city and state officials should have resigned immediately following the catastrophic Pacific Palisades fire. He lamented the lack of accountability from those in power. “I was waiting for somebody to step up and go after these people, and nobody did. So I was like, OK, well, it’s my job to do that,” he declared.

The devastation of the fire impacted not only Pratt but also affected many in the community, including his parents. He made his mayoral announcement during a protest titled “They Let Us Burn!” held on the anniversary of the fire, near the ashes of his former residence. This event highlighted the ongoing frustrations and grievances shared by many Los Angeles residents affected by the fires.

Pratt’s harrowing experience centered around the heartbreaking realization that the destruction was largely preventable. He remarked, “We are standing here amongst the ashes of our once beautiful town because the state and local leaders let us burn.” This poignant reflection captures the sentiment of community members who feel abandoned in the wake of disaster.

A Legal Challenge

In January 2025, Pratt, together with 20 other property owners, filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles and its Department of Water and Power. They accuse the city and the utility company of negligence that led to the destruction of their homes. According to Cal Fire, approximately 16,251 structures fell victim to the Pacific Palisades fire, yet nearly one year later, less than 12 have been fully reconstructed.

Pratt described Los Angeles as being in “the darkest times ever,” citing an escalating homelessness crisis and rampant open drug use as symptoms of the city’s decline. His remarks come amidst a growing concern for public safety and community values.

Addressing Homelessness and Animal Welfare

The reality star has taken initiatives to work with animal rescue organizations as part of his broader campaign to address community issues. He spoke of distressing incidents in Skid Row, an area heavily impacted by homelessness and drug addiction, where atrocities against animals are increasingly visible. “People are torturing and mutilating dogs daily, just on the side of the street,” Pratt stated, attributing these behaviors to mental health issues and substance abuse. He criticized local leadership for failing to intervene and prevent such acts.

Criticism of Current Mayor

Pratt has not held back in his criticism of the current mayor, Karen Bass, particularly for her absence when the fires broke out. He underscored that as mayor, he would remain present during emergencies. He expressed curiosity about the deleted text messages from Bass regarding the fires, suggesting that the contents could reveal important truths about the handling of the crisis. “What are in those text messages that were deleted? I can’t wait to read those,” he proclaimed, underscoring his intent to shed light on the omissions he perceives in the city’s leadership.

A Political Journey and a New Memoir

Pratt recently published a memoir titled “The Guy You Loved to Hate: Confessions from a Reality TV Villain,” a release that coincides with his campaign efforts. Addressing criticism concerning the timing of his book launch, he clarified that the memoir’s purpose is separate from his political ambitions. “They’ll understand within a few years from now when I’m still doing this, the book has nothing to do with the journey that she [Bass] put me on by letting my house burn down,” Pratt asserted.

With the city election approaching on June 2, Pratt is positioning himself as a candidate ready to challenge the status quo and bring empathy and accountability to the forefront of Los Angeles politics.

This political journey marks a pivotal moment not only for Pratt but for the citizens of Los Angeles who seek change in their leadership. The forthcoming election will undoubtedly offer an opportunity for a fresh perspective on issues deeply affecting the community.
