Across the United States, law enforcement officers are answering the call to serve with steadfast courage and unwavering commitment. Their dedication to protecting communities often comes despite facing tremendous risks and threats. It is crucial for us to acknowledge their sacrifices and stand with them during challenging times.
The latest FBI report reveals that 64 officers lost their lives in the line of duty last year, with 18 already tragically having died in 2025. These statistics represent more than just numbers; they embody the lives and legacies of individuals committed to a dangerous and demanding profession. Despite the growing threats they face, officers continue to show up for every shift, every call, and every crisis encountered.
Since my appointment as FBI director in February, I have prioritized reaching out to every chief and sheriff who has faced the heartbreak of losing an officer this year. Such conversations are incredibly difficult, yet deeply necessary. Each interaction reveals the strength and resolve that are hallmarks of the law enforcement community.
Consider Deputy Brandon Sikes of Columbia County, Georgia, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop while serving a protective order. His spouse works alongside him in the same agency, continuing their shared mission in the face of loss.
Officer Osmar Rodarte of the Marysville Police Department also made the ultimate sacrifice, dying while targeting a violent drug trafficking operation from Mexico. He understood the risks yet chose to serve for the greater good.
Sgt. Joseph Azcona from Newark, New Jersey, lost his life while working to remove illegal firearms from the streets. He was shot by a 14-year-old, highlighting the complex public safety issues that our communities now confront.
These officers not only lived honorably but also demonstrated a unique purpose. They ran towards perilous situations so that others could live in safety and peace. Such valor is not merely commendable; it is essential for the well-being of society.
Today’s law enforcement professionals face mounting pressures. Officers are tasked with addressing a range of critical issues, including fentanyl overdoses, dismantling gang operations, preventing mass shootings, combating child exploitation, and responding to the consequences of flawed criminal justice policies. They are required to endure long hours, personal sacrifices, and too often, hostility from the public.
Recruitment is a pressing problem. As the challenges intensify, we must respond with unwavering resolve instead of despair.
At the FBI, we are taking action to make a difference. I have redirected nearly 1,500 personnel from our Washington, D.C. headquarters to field offices nationwide, ensuring that our agents can provide critical support to state and local law enforcement. Additionally, we are dedicated to training officers across the country through our Officer Safety Awareness programs, which have enhanced the safety of more than 90,000 officers on the job. We are actively working against violent criminals, drug cartels, and trafficking networks that threaten our communities.
Yet, the most vital partnership exists between law enforcement and the American public. As we commemorate National Police Week, I urge every citizen to express their appreciation for law enforcement, transcending mere words into tangible actions. Report any suspicious activity you observe. Cooperate during investigations. Educate your children about respecting law enforcement. And most importantly, when encountering an officer, take a moment to extend your gratitude. A simple thank you holds more power than many realize.
The officers we lost this year epitomize a commitment to upholding the law and protecting the vulnerable. The ones who remain carry forward the mission without hesitation, fanfare, or promises of safety.
These brave individuals serve with honor and devotion. We must reciprocate their sacrifices with an unyielding display of action, support, and appreciation.
They watch our backs every day; it is high time we show that we have theirs.
