On Wednesday, Staten Island activist Scott Lo Baido was apprehended outside an event organized by New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. The gathering, aimed at opposing former President Donald Trump, took place at Istanbul Bay Authentic Mediterranean Restaurant.
A widely circulated video captured the moment when Lo Baido shouted, “This is my island, you are not welcome here,” as he attempted to approach Mamdani while being restrained. His confrontational remarks were intertwined with aggressive language directed towards the candidate and his supporters.
During his outburst, Lo Baido expressed disdain for various groups, using explicit language to declare his grievances. Following the disruption, he was arrested by the New York Police Department, leading to charges that included disorderly conduct and not having a permit to amplify sound.
In a subsequent interview with Fox News Digital, Lo Baido acknowledged the arrest, suggesting that his actions should inspire similar confrontations throughout the boroughs whenever Mamdani appears in public.
Outside the restaurant, attendees echoed Lo Baido’s sentiments, with protesters brandishing slogans like “Go back to where you came from.” A demonstrator wearing attire supportive of Trump gestured to the candidate, asserting that Mamdani didn’t represent Staten Island.
As Mamdani sought to amplify his anti-Trump message, he encountered loud disturbances from protesters outside, who used cowbells, sirens, and megaphones to drown out the speeches inside the venue.
Mamdani remained composed in the face of hostility. He remarked, “It is disheartening to hear such divisive language, yet it aligns with the rhetoric that has been prevalent in Trump’s politics.”
This event marked Mamdani’s third anti-Trump rally in a week. He reaffirmed his dedication to protecting New Yorkers from Trump-related policies on immigration if elected mayor this November, despite the spirited opposition outside the restaurant.
Mamdani’s commitment to his campaign remains steadfast. He stated, “I will continue to engage with New Yorkers, irrespective of their political beliefs or where they reside. It is essential to address the concerns of all constituents, regardless of the opposing views they express.”
Many protesters outside the venue signaled their intention to support the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the upcoming election, vocalizing support for his vision of the city.
Among the demonstrators was a Staten Island resident who carried a prominent American flag and vocally opposed Mamdani’s ideologies, claiming that those ideas do not resonate with the values of Staten Island.
Trump’s stronghold in Staten Island, where he secured a 30-point win in the 2024 presidential election, contrasts sharply with the political leanings of neighboring Brooklyn, where Kamala Harris won by a substantial margin.
Tommy Banks, a Staten Island native, succinctly conveyed his message to Mamdani: “Get out of town.” He expressed skepticism towards Mamdani’s platform, arguing that socialist policies are economically unsustainable and do not reflect the character of Staten Island residents.
Further emphasizing the anti-Mamdani sentiment, Liz, a local protester, labeled him a “commie,” arguing that the candidate’s policies, such as free childcare and government-run grocery stores, would lead to disastrous outcomes for the city.
Lo Baido and other critics have described Mamdani as an embodiment of extreme leftist politics. Even the current mayor, who is now an independent candidate, referred to Mamdani as a “snake-oil salesman” during his campaign.
However, not all responses have been negative. Shahana Masum, a supporter of Mamdani, defended him passionately, stating that his policies align closely with her values and the needs of her community. She recounted her own experiences of facing discrimination and underscored the importance of dignity and respect in political discourse.
Mamdani’s opponents maintain a unified front, asserting that his stances on issues like rent control, corporate tax hikes, and raising the minimum wage do not reflect Staten Island’s interests.
