Stephanie Turner Takes Leave from Fencing Amid Controversy Over Trans Athlete Policy

EXCLUSIVE: Women’s fencer Stephanie Turner has announced her decision to step away from the sport for the time being, following a 12-month probation handed down by USA Fencing. This probation stems from her refusal to compete against trans athlete Redmond Sullivan at the Cherry Blossom Open held on March 30.

The 31-year-old Maryland native knelt in protest during her match, making a powerful statement against what she views as an unfair competitive landscape. After refusing to fence Sullivan, Turner received a black card and was escorted from the venue, an act that sparked significant media attention and even led to a federal investigation into the organization’s policies.

USA Fencing confirmed to Fox News Digital that Turner is indeed on probation and retains the ability to participate in events. However, she has chosen to take a hiatus from competition.

Turner reflects on her decision to kneel, stating that she anticipated it would have serious repercussions on her life. She expressed that the protest has disrupted her training and personal interactions, especially in public.

“I’ll be taking a break from fencing in the U.S. circuit, and that is a significant disruption for me. It’s affected my training and my ability to interact with the public, which is challenging,” Turner remarked. “It has certainly disrupted my competition, as I won’t be participating in the United States any time soon.”

Shifting Focus to Advocacy

While Turner steps back from the sport, she intends to channel her energy into advocacy work. She is committed to the movement aimed at prohibiting trans athletes from competing in women’s categories.

“I will remain in the public eye for as long as it takes to resolve this issue,” she stated, emphasizing her determination.

Impact on Personal Relationships

The fallout from her protest has affected her relationships. Turner shared that some friends now give her
