Steve Spurrier Questions Arch Manning’s Readiness as Texas Longhorns Prepare for New Season

Just a few years ago, Arch Manning stood out as one of the most highly coveted high school recruits in the nation. His decision to join the Texas Longhorns marked a significant step in his football career, generating immense anticipation from fans and analysts.

With the recent selection of Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, the path has opened for Manning to take the reins as the starting quarterback for Texas. However, despite his potential, former college football coach Steve Spurrier remains skeptical about Manning’s readiness for the pivotal role.

During his coaching tenure, Spurrier led the Florida Gators to a national championship in 1996. So, his insights carry weight in the football community. He recently expressed concerns regarding the decision by Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian to favor Ewers over Manning over the past couple of seasons.

Spurrier’s skepticism raises an important question. If Manning possesses the potential that everyone talks about, why did the coaching staff opt to start Ewers, who was ultimately drafted lower?

“Most people are picking Texas to win the SEC in football,” Spurrier said on a recent episode of the podcast “Another Dooley Noted.” He added, “They’ve got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman, too. My question is, if he was this good, how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year? He was a seventh-round pick?”

Spurrier then brought up a key point, questioning Sarkisian’s choice. He stated, “You only have to ask Coach Sark how come you played that one instead of this one. Hopefully, he’ll say, ‘Because we thought he was better than that one.’ Isn’t that why you play one guy and not the other? Unless it was discipline, and there was no discipline or anything.”

As Manning waited for his opportunity, speculation arose regarding his future with the Longhorns. Fans wondered whether he might transfer to a program that could provide him immediate playing time.

In an interview earlier this year, Manning acknowledged the challenges of being a backup quarterback in today’s competitive environment. “It was tough. I mean, it’s tough in this age,” he remarked. “Sometimes it’s worth the wait.” His commitment to the Longhorns remains strong, as he aims to solidify his role at the university.

“But I hope it pays off. There’s nowhere else I want to be,” Manning expressed passionately. “I want to be at Texas. I’ve got friends here. I love this place. So, I want to be the quarterback at the University of Texas.”

During the previous season, Manning made his mark in 10 games, including two starts when Ewers was sidelined due to injury. He completed the season with 939 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and only two interceptions. Beyond his passing abilities, Manning showcased his athletic prowess, rushing for 108 yards and scoring four touchdowns.

Texas had a promising run in the College Football Playoff, defeating Clemson in the first round and edging out Arizona State in a thrilling overtime victory. However, their playoff journey ended when the Ohio State Buckeyes, who would go on to claim the national championship, eliminated them.

Looking ahead, Texas is set to kick off the 2025 season against Ohio State in a highly anticipated matchup in Columbus on August 30.

What Lies Ahead for Arch Manning?

With the new season on the horizon, many questions loom for Arch Manning at Texas. He will need to step up to the challenge and demonstrate that he can lead the Longhorns effectively. The expectations surrounding him could both motivate and pressure him as he navigates his first year as the starter.

Football fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Manning can rise to the occasion and fulfill the potential that has drawn so much attention throughout his young career. His performance will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of the Longhorns this season.

As anticipation builds, one thing remains clear: the spotlight is firmly on Arch Manning, and his journey in college football is just beginning.
