On a recent Monday, the embassy and various consulates shared their concerns after confirming numerous incidents of U.S. citizens being abducted by individuals they met through dating apps in the past few months. This unsettling trend has prompted officials to remind travelers of the importance of exercising caution while pursuing romantic connections abroad.
Retired Secret Service agent Bobby McDonald, who now lectures in criminal justice at the University of New Haven, emphasized the need for travelers to be vigilant. He stated, “You must be careful and assume that something could go wrong during the dating process.”
McDonald recommends that anyone using dating apps in these areas should remain particularly alert. He advises arranging meetings in public, well-lit locations that are not isolated. Additionally, travelers should prioritize places with reliable cell phone service and always be aware of their surroundings. McDonald strongly urges individuals to inform friends and family about their whereabouts.
The Dangers of Dating Apps
McDonald explained that dating apps represent a new avenue for criminals to enact their schemes. He remarked, “Apps are the next level for those with malicious intentions. It’s essential to stay aware while navigating these platforms.”
Travelers, he cautioned, should recognize their environments and be prepared to respond if faced with a dangerous scenario. McDonald highlighted the need for heightened situational awareness when using these apps, as well as understanding the local context of where one is visiting.
Regions specifically highlighted in the embassy alert include Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit. The embassy noted that victims and their families may sometimes face extortion attempts for significant amounts of money to secure their release.
Officials reiterated that violence is not confined to specific geographical areas and urged travelers to be cautious when interacting with strangers. They advised holding meetings in public spaces while steering clear of places such as homes or private hotel rooms where the risk of crime is elevated.

McDonald expressed that the concerns raised in the alert are not surprising to him. He stated, “Whenever we travel, there is always something new to worry about, particularly when families or students are involved in activities like spring break.”
While the embassy did not specify which dating apps were implicated in these abductions, McDonald suggests that it is vital for travelers to conduct thorough research ahead of their trips. Before venturing to unfamiliar locales, he encourages tourists to familiarize themselves with the area surrounding their accommodation.
“Knowing your surroundings is paramount,” McDonald explained. He advised taking additional precautions, such as having the contact information for the U.S. Embassy or local consulate readily available and making multiple copies of important documents like passports.

The U.S. Consulate General reminds citizens that the travel advisory for Mexico categorizes Jalisco, where both Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit are located, as “Level 3,” meaning that travelers should reconsider their plans due to crime risks. In contrast, neighboring Nayarit is classified as “Level 2,” which calls for increased caution due to criminal activity.
Countries such as Italy, France, and Germany also find themselves under Level 2 advisories, signaling the need for travelers to remain vigilant wherever they go.
