Sydney Sweeney, the star of the film Americana, has received backing from her co-star Halsey following criticism that has engulfed both the actress and the film. The backlash stems from Sweeney’s recent advertisement for American Eagle, which has sparked a public outcry and overshadowed the film’s premiere.
Despite the anticipation surrounding the release, Americana generated only $500,000 during its opening weekend, as reported by industry sources. This disappointing figure is widely attributed to the controversy surrounding Sweeney’s American Eagle ad campaign.
In a move to rally support for the film, Halsey took to Instagram on August 21. She expressed her admiration for director Tony Tost, stating, “You should go see this movie because Tony Tost made an exceptional film, in honor of a genre he knows intimately.” Halsey emphasized that Tost’s vision transcends the tabloid chatter that has focused on the ad.
She urged the public to appreciate the artistry involved in filmmaking, insisting that the talent behind Americana deserves recognition. “If you love cinema, then you should know that cinema comes first. This is cinema,” Halsey articulated, revealing her commitment to defending the work of dedicated filmmakers.
Halsey further mentioned the significance of language in today’s world, indicating that while the matters surrounding advertising are complicated, it is unfair to target Tost and his crew for circumstances unrelated to their production. “I don’t think it’s fair for the news cycle to predatorily rip a hardworking director and his hardworking crew for this film that is completely separate from a (pretty dumb) advertising take,” she stated.
In light of the film’s challenges, director Tony Tost has shared his thoughts regarding the reception of Americana. His recent post on social media suggested that films can outlast the trends of their release period. He expressed curiosity about how the film will be perceived after the current controversy subsides. Tost noted, “One of the great things about movies is that they outlive the zeitgeist into which they were released.” This sentiment reflects a hopeful outlook, suggesting that the film has the potential to gain appreciation over time.
The actress’s partnership with American Eagle has drawn mixed reactions, especially a campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” Within one version of the advertisement, Sweeney made a somewhat puzzling remark about the genetic legacy of jeans, which some have criticized as tone-deaf due to alleged racial undertones.
While critics pounced on the campaign, others came to Sweeney’s defense, praising her for subverting typical advertising narratives often labeled as
