Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, ICE has issued 400% more detainers for illegal immigrants in New York compared to the entire four-year term of former President Joe Biden.

According to the data released on Wednesday, since Trump took office in January, ICE has filed 6,025 arrest requests for transferring custody of individuals. In stark contrast, Biden authorized only 9,472 detainers during his presidency.

Despite this significant increase in detainers issued, New York City has reportedly honored only a minimal number of these requests. Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin highlighted this discrepancy, stating, “In just six months, ICE has issued over 6,000 detainers in NYC alone—that’s a more than 400 percent increase in the number of detainers lodged under Biden.” This raises questions about the policies enacted by local leaders regarding cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

McLaughlin criticized local politicians, specifically naming Mayor Eric Adams, for what she deems a harmful disregard for ICE detainers. She emphasized that failing to act on these requests endangers American citizens, stating, “When sanctuary politicians ignore ICE detainers, they are protecting criminal illegal aliens at the expense of American citizens. These are dangerous individuals with prior convictions for serious offenses such as rape, murder, and drug trafficking. Instead of holding them for ICE, sanctuary politicians release them back into your communities.”

For example, two undocumented immigrants released under Biden allegedly shot an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer. Both of these individuals had prior arrests for violent crimes and were released by the NYPD, sparking outrage and concern for community safety.
