The recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah has brought political violence into sharp focus for the nation. Prosecutors have charged Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old, in connection with Kirk’s killing on September 10, which took place during an event at Utah Valley University.
Experts categorize Kirk’s assassination as one of the most significant incidents in what researchers identify as a burgeoning wave of left-wing violence. This incident has reignited concerns about the state of political discord in the United States.
A fresh report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reveals troubling data highlighting a surge in left-wing terrorism. Based on their analysis, the report indicates that the number of terrorist incidents attributed to left-wing extremists this year places 2025 on track to be the deadliest year for this faction in over three decades.
For the first time in 30 years, the number of left-wing attacks and plots has surpassed those from the far right. This comprehensive study tracks 750 terrorist incidents in the U.S. spanning from 1994 to July 2025.
The report provides a clear definition of terrorism, detailing it as violence or threats perpetrated by non-state actors aimed at achieving political objectives while instilling fear. Analysts connecting these leftist attacks to a rise in hostility note they are predominantly concentrated on government institutions and conservative leaders. Interestingly, despite the increasing number of incidents, the report points out that the lethality of left-wing violence remains relatively low.
One notable incident occurred on July 4, when a group of masked individuals armed with rifles and fireworks attacked the ICE Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado, Texas. During the assault, the perpetrators vandalized the facility with anti-ICE graffiti, shot a police officer, and exchanged fire with correctional officers before managing to escape. Following the attack, authorities charged fourteen individuals with attempted murder and other firearms-related offenses.
In January, Capitol Police apprehended Riley Jane English, a 24-year-old, as she threatened to kill prominent Republican figures while armed with a knife and two Molotov cocktails. This incident underscores the increasing risks faced by political leaders.
A similar event took place in March, when arsonists set fire to the headquarters of the Republican Party of New Mexico. They left behind a chilling message that read “ICE = KKK,” emphasizing the hostility directed toward conservative entities.
Comparatively, while left-wing violence has seen a troubling rise, the fatalities resulting from these attacks have been lower than those from right-wing or jihadist terrorism. Since 2020, only two deaths can be attributed to left-wing violence prior to Kirk’s assassination: the murdered Aaron Danielson in Portland and UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024.
The case of Brian Thompson, who was shot in December 2024, involved Luigi Mangione, who was alleged to have committed the crime. Although terrorism charges were ultimately dismissed, the Department of Justice labeled the act as politically motivated. This illustrates the ongoing threat posed by ideological extremism across the political spectrum.
On the other hand, experts have noted that right-wing terrorism has historically resulted in a higher death toll. Researchers emphasize that the current lull in right-wing incidents may not last. They caution that right-wing extremism could easily resurge to previous dangerous levels.
In light of this disturbing trend, researchers stress the importance of how leaders across the political spectrum respond to incidents of violence. The CSIS report warns that heavy-handed approaches, such as crackdowns on nonviolent groups, could inadvertently exacerbate extremism and violence.
Officials and activists are urged to lead by example, condemning violence within their ranks and advocating for calm, especially when it comes to violent actions from opposing sides. This approach could facilitate a healthier political environment and deter further escalation.
The shocking nature of Kirk’s assassination serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by ideologically driven violence. The incidents in which high-profile conservative figures are targeted signal a new and concerning trend in political hostility.
Moreover, the frequency of political violence in the U.S. is now at its highest level since the mid-1990s. Analysts from CSIS assert that ignoring this trend would be perilously unwise, as it presents a significant threat to national stability and democratic processes.
